I'm posting this here because I want to share & don't know where you want me to put it as it's not poetic or about horses. I'm going to do a longer piece on Charlotte Bronte when I get round to it.
I went to Haworth yesterday. It's supposed to be Bronte country but strictly speaking it isn't because Patrick Bronte & his wife originally came from Ireland with their 2 daughters Maria & Elizabeth to Thornton where Branwell, their son was born as well as Charlotte, Emily & Anne. The umlaut on the top of the e of their name would suggest German origins. They moved to Haworth which was the main inspiration for Charlotte, Emily & Anne's books. They went to the Clergy Daughter's School in Cowan Bridge which became the setting for Lowood in Jane Eyre. They were governesses for a time. They wrote under the pseudonym's of Currer, Ellis & Acton Bell as at that time women & literature weren't seen to mix & it was thought that if you over-stimulated a woman's brain it rendered her useless for their true purpose in life which was to look after their home, husband & children. Charlotte wrote 4 books, Jane Eyre, Shirley, The Professor & Villette. Emily wrote 2 books, Wuthering Heights & a book of poems. Anne wrote 2 books, Agnes Grey & the Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Smith, Elder & co. published their books. Their brother Branwell was a painter.
