Very nice volley by Goffin.

They were saying Federer was his idol when he was younger, I wonder what it is like mentally to play someone you idolized? hmm... I remember in the London Olympics one of the Italian girls idolized Misty May then her and Kerri anhilated them so bad they made the poor girl cry lol

Yeah he had a nice interview with him at RG a few years ago. Goffin played very well that day and said he had a big poster of him on his wall afterwards when he was younger.

56% first serves isn't great and Roger will definitely need to step it up from now on.

Has Fed played Sock before? I don't remember...

Just once at Indian Wells this year which Fed won 6-3 6-2.

He's a good player but he's not gonna beat Federer on this court. He'd be a tougher opponent on clay or slow hards.

Sheesh, so Goffin choked it away, eh? :popcorn

Both Cilic and Goffin choked it away I guess! Up a set and a break in the 1st match and giving Roger fits in the 2nd until it got to the 3rd when these "gutless" wonders seem to forget how to play the game! :cover :puzzled :nono  :dodgy:

Well let's look closer at things. Once the momentum shifted in the Nadal-Cilic match, the man who took control in the second set went onto win it.

In the other match, Goffin wrested control from Federer, gained all the momentum going into the third, then promptly dropped a calf... :cover

A much better Sock now, but still....

While Sock has definitely improved since the beginning of 2014, I would not say he has improved much during the period between IW of this year and now and so don't expect anything earthshaking.

Frankly, I felt that Federer had today's match under control until he inexplicably began to misfire and Goffin, who's no slouch, rightly took advantage. Fed got it together in the 3rd set and creamed him. I was wondering if the hiccup in the second set was caused by Fed's being nervous looking ahead to the final!

While I don't think he will beat Federer, I'll have to disagree with this one. Sock is learning to win the matches he is supposed to win and starting to beat the No. 11~20 ranked players. He still has yet to figure out how to beat the top guys but I think he is definitely improving. He should be in the Top 20 after the AO. Maybe earlier.
