She just said it in her presser and I saw her say it on TV. I guess that's going out on a high note, but I'm stunned. Thoughts?

I just watched this on TV and to say I'm stunned would be a gross understatement. I really like her and am saddened by this development.

I wonder if she failed a drug test. Something has to be driving this.

I noticed that she lost a three setter to Simona Healp. Is her retirement effective
immediately or end of year.

She said it was her last match.

I can't say I blame her. All the press after Wimbledon, stupid sports writers trashing her looks, etc. She is tired. However, I would not be surprised if she takes 6-12 months off then decides to come back. Hey, it happens. BTW I think she's is a very attractive and extremely intelligent young lady. Perhaps she wants to do college. Whatever her future desires and goals are, I wish her well.

I would not call that going out on a high note. She just ate breadstick in the third set which
Simona fed her. If she wanted to go out on high note, she could have announced right
away at the Wimbledon ball.

The Wimbledon title must have been a huge release for her. Not wanting to quit before she felt like she's accomplished something she'll be really proud of. Then it happens so suddenly ... and voila ... now she can do w/e she wants.

She said her body that couldn't handle it anymore.

I doubt it. If that were the case, she would not have shown up
in toronoto or cincy (unless of course, the drug test was conducted
in one of these two places).

Yeah, to say this doesn't pass the smell test is putting it mildly. From winning Wimbledon to retiring one month later...

She does not fail my smell test. She has played 47 grand slams. She is supposed to have very high IQ.
Using that IQ, she would have figured out that the chances of winning another grand slam
without facing anyone in top 15 is less than one in a million and so would have decided
to call it quits.

Besides, her father and ex-coach is a medical doctor and he would not let her
take anything that can be detected.

You all are such cynics. I can't see Bartoli being the kind of person who would do drugs. Certainly her fitness nor game has changed. She was always a threat when least expected.

She is a quirky interesting girl who very unique value system. Perhaps this was what she needed to be able to move on in her life.

Marion Bartoli Calls It Quits

MASON, Ohio -- Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli has retired after losing her latest match at the Western & Southern Open.

The 28-year-old player from France has suffered through a series of injuries even as she enjoyed the highlight of her career this year, winning at Wimbledon. She was seeded eighth in Cincinnati and lost to Simona Halep 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday night.

After two hours of considering her physical condition, she tearfully announced she's quitting. Bartoli said her Achilles, shoulder, hips and lower back hurt continuously when she plays.

Mars Bars was one of my favorite Players and I will miss her.

Maybe after a while as the body heals and the mind relaxes

The urge will return and we may see more of her. She's only 28

And who knows, She may invent something to help battered

players. After all She is a Genius.
