The Stanford Classic, currently sponsored by Bank of the West, is held on the campus of Stanford University in Stanford, California, United States. Started in 1971, the tournament is the oldest women's-only tournament in the world and is played on outdoor hardcourts. It is the first women's tournament in the annual US Open Series. Bank of the West has been the title sponsor since 1992.

The tournament started out as the British Motor Cars Invitation in 1971 on the Virginia Slims circuit. Martina Navratilova holds the record for the most singles titles: five (1979–1980, 1988, 1991, and 1993). Other winners include four-time champ Kim Clijsters, three-time champs Lindsay Davenport, Chris Evert, Billie Jean King and Serena Williams, and Margaret Court, Martina Hingis, Hana Mandlikova, Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, Monica Seles and Venus Williams.

RE: Bank of The West Classic

Serena Williams has withdrawn - her elbow still bothers her.

"I'm disappointed to have to withdraw from the Bank of the West Classic, but I need to get my elbow back to 100%,” said Williams. “The tournament is one of my favorites and the fans have always been so generous and supportive of me. I wish all of the players much success and I hope to return next year."

Good Move. This means Serena will play just Toronto and Cincy before USO. That is exactly the best course of option to complete the CGS.

She played couple of matches in Bastad to collect Appearance Fee and then promptly dropped out of WTT and Stanford. Good job.

I dont htink I've ever seen so many people happy to see Serena drop out of a tournament. Its a really smart move. Considering to play Toronto Cincy is already two weeks in a row with only a week off before the Open.

Serena needs a break from the media asking her about the Grand Slam. She can just play Cincy to get rid of the cobwebs and can afford to miss Toronto because she has enough points cushion.

I truly question whether Lisicki will ever be an elite player. She just doesn't seem to have mental fortitude and "tennis brain" to make that next step.
