I need opinions: do you want this topic to be used as main one for the first few rounds of AO, up to quarters, maybe?  Or do you want a separate one for each round?  I am asking since there are a couple of other threads related to AO and it would be nice for all of us to comment the action on the same one :)

Here is OOP for day 1:

Some interesting matches today, first off Thiem is scheduled to meet Leonardo Mayer later today.  It could be a tricky match for Dominic, Mayer is a very good player.  Kohli vs Nishikori could be interesting.  Personally I am looking forward to watching Nole playing young Chung.

I think you're right to keep the match talk on one thread until it gets winnowed down.  Anyway, there are several interesting looking matches day one, as you say, also Tsonga/Baggy could be entertaining.  At least Djokovic will be on early enough to give it a look.  Wonder how Chung will fare on the big stage against the Big Dog?

Thanks Moxie for giving your opinion re threads.

He is a promising star and kind of molds his game upon Nole's.  I am also happy that this match should be relatively early on tonight for us so I can see it.  I am hoping that it can start by 10:30pm.

Tsonga vs Baghdatis could be interesting, but I don't know what shape Marcos is in so it's hard to say.

Coric meets Ramos-Vinolas, not the easiest 1st match for Borna.

I don't think Bagdahtis will win, but his game is flashy, and so is Jo-Wil's.  And the Frenchman is unpredictable enough to make it a fun ride.  I've got my eye on Coric, too.  And if we get a bit more esoteric:  Pospisil v. Simon?  Benneteau v. Almagro?

Thiem is up 2 sets to love on L. Mayer, Karlovic is down 2 sets to love on Delbonis, and Nishikori seems to be in control over Kohly.

Karlovic retires, so the first seed to be out.

First winners, Kei Nishikori, Austin Krajicek and Delbonis.

Theim through over L. Mayer.  I only saw the TB, but Thiem looked very solid.

Plus, there's a guaranteed qualifier to go through amongst the 2 who play each other, right?

Correct.

And I like Chung, he is very solid.

Well, he's not overwhelmed by the moment.  Got the break-back.  One suspects a tight 1st set, but then we shall see.  The heat will get to him, if nothing else.

He will probably get tired, but he has both wings very steady and a very good mover

Yeah, all he had was in the 1st.  Looks to be over now.  4-0.  Coric is fighting for his life v. Ramos-Viñolas. I thought that would be tighter, and that Coric should win it.  GGLopez close to closing out P-H Mathieu in straights.  Simon/Pospisil have a set each.

Coric out in straight sets.
