I am actually sitting here thinking that I'm very impressed with Tomic. He's just won it and while I can see how it might seem like he looks passive I'd say it just looks easy for him. I'm basically sitting here thinking that he makes tennis looks pathetically easy. It seems effortless to him. Just not in the same way that it does for Federer or Djokovic. Federer is always on the attack and has a grace about him. Tomic, it's like he can just swing away and it's just going to be a great shot. So it looks a bit or a lot nonchalant. But it's sort of awesome. Maybe he was just having a great day. Everything was connecting and going in or something like that. Because a number of his winners just seemed to get that injection of pace suddenly that Djokovic or Nishikori will put into it, but you didn't notice that he did it until it went past Kamke. It makes you recognize why he was so highly touted as the next great young talent. His talent is supremely evident. Certainly he has had his bratty stage and he still walks with a rich kid swagger or an I'm all that and a bag of chips swagger. And that's a big turn off for me. But if he plays with the focus he seems to have today, maybe we'll start to see him be the top tier player he was touted to be. Maybe. Because then again, it may just be that he was playing Kamke. Kamke is no pushover, but he has a bit of a ceiling and I think Tomic can definitely play above his ceiling, and he of course is literally 3 to 5 inches taller than him so that certainly helped as well. We'll see how his nonchalant ball striking looks against better players. I was thoroughly impressed though. I don't want to say he seemed humble. But.... I might have to say he seemed humble. There was no arguing with the umpire (but he was winning), no playing to the crowd even and they were already going wild for him. At the end he simply stuck his hand up in the air in triumph. But he knows it's just the first round. We'll see if he's actually got his act together the rest of this slam and the rest of this season. And, more importantly, if he does have his act together, we'll finally see if he's actually any good.
