This was a big win for Novak, reestablishing himself, saying "I own Australia". I think he goes into AO as the favorite.

He's a great champion, but I wouldn't get carried away just yet. I mean, the main significance of this tourney for the players is as a tune up for Oz. I tend to divide matches into matches that are just statistics, and matches which are indicators of something. This was a bit of both for Novak, and the signs are promising. He dug deep because he was so determined to get the win, and he played excellent tennis too. It was much more important for him, I think.

But for Andy, he might easily shrug this one off. It also has the added benefit of taking some pressure off him before Oz. Not that he intended any of this - he fought greatly to try win - but he's not going to be at his best just yet anyway, in his first matches of the season. He'll feel he can improve and do better in Oz.

Great match though. Not their usual snoozefest. I mean, this is a 250, and they went at it like their lives depended on it, which was great to see...
