About Rotterdam:
Rotterdam is a major port city in the Netherlands' province of South Holland. The Maritime Museum's vintage ships and exhibits trace the city's seafaring history. The 17th-century Delfshaven neighborhood is home to canalside shopping and the Pilgrim Fathers Church, where pilgrims worshiped before sailing to America. After being almost completely reconstructed following WWII, the city is now known for its bold, modern architecture.

Roger Federer was scheduled to highlight the event but has withdrawn following knee surgery. According to the ATP website: Tournament director Richard Krajicek had no late success in drafting in another top player to take the pace of Federer, with the tournament boss reportedly trying his luck with Novak Djokovic, defending champion Stan Wawrinka and 2015 finalist Tomas Berdych.

Nick Kyrgios has also withdrawn due to injury leaving a weaker than usual field at the Rotterdam event.

One of the weakest fields I can remember, no top 10 player in a 500 event is very rare. Krajicek must be pissed, this is what happens when you put all your eggs into a basket

Agreed. I was especially surprised to see Stan wasn't playing, being the defending champion and all.

I guess they blew the budget on Fed at Stan's expense and then couldn't persuade him to show up when Fed dropped out.

A great chance for one of the other guys out of top 10 to snatch a good title.

It's a sad state of affairs if we don't consider Cilic being in to be interesting. And I don't. However, there are 2 first round matches to look at: RBA v. Sousa and Gasquet v. Chardy.

The field in Buenos Aires is tougher than Rotterdam. Richard Krajicek (Director) can't be too happy.

Joao has won both of their prior matches, although both of them were on clay.

Troicki v. Kuznetsov could be interesting. Gulbis v. Monfils should be entertaining.

Joao is a tough out on clay, he had a nice tournament win in Valencia last year.

There are some interesting matches for the regular tennis fans, but the pull for the casual fan took a big hit when Federer had to withdraw and the other marquee names basically stuck two fingers up to Krajicek.

I watched a bit of Coric v. De Bakker today. De Bakker had 10 MPs in the first, and failed to close it out. That could be a record. He rallied in the 2nd, to his credit, but Coric got him in the end.

Seventh seeded Paire is out, falling to Dodig 6-3 7-5
Rosol is another first round casualty. Cilic advances to the second round. As Moxie mentioned Young Coric has also won his first round match.

Hey Mox, I was watching that match last night thinking I would be the only one of the board, nice to see you saw it too. It was a fun match to watch. De Bakker is such a headcase, he should be a top 50 player, but he comes short mentally. 10 set points, especially those missed on his serve did him no favors. Not too impressed with Coric tbh. Everything except the forehand (which is average) is quite good, but nothing spectacular. I enjoy watching Ferrer more.

Nice win for Chung.
Yes good to see him win. GL is ranked 34 so nice win indeed. He has a good draw with all those players bailing, although I guess someone else will capitalize on that.

Hey, Denis: I mis-typed, they were set points. Yes, I remember thinking some time back that perhaps De Bakker was amongst the next big things, but nothing. I like Coric...he's only 18. Makes rookie errors, but I'm going to hold out hope for him. Didn't watch anything today, but also happy for Chung.
