A year in the life of...

Rose

Sorry everyone I guess I've been a Lurker myself lately  I looked at the date 2006 and my first thought was that it wasn't that long ago. But my second thought was why in the world don't I remember anything about it?!

Then it came to me it was a selected memory loss. (Thanks for bring it back up :cover )

We were going to get a new roof put on our house. The contractor came and talked to us about the kind of roofing we wanted. We decided and he said that he and some of his crew would come back and measure the roof. We were required to make a down payment for the roof, the roof got measured, and that was the last we saw of the contractor! So we had no roof and our money was gone on top of that! To make a long story short we had to go through H*LL to get our money back from that contractor! He was a con artist of the highest order! But after a court battle we did get our money back!

Our dog which had never been healthy was getting older and sicker. Never buy a dog from a pet store! So the stress with our dog's problems and trying to get our money back from the contractor was very hard on me.

I tried to take my mind off things by posting in a tennis forum whose name I won't mention and I would like to forget that also. And I was made a Beta Tester for a company. Sorry I can't give you anymore information about that except to say I really enjoyed doing that.

Mostly it was a bad year which I have tried to wipe completely from my memory bank. But thankfully it was not nearly as bad as JLLB's year so I will try to remember that no matter how bad things are for me they can always be much, much, worse for other people! I'm glad JLLB is able to still be with us :)

So I will be happy to pass the baton to Si Si Simona and give him the year 2008.

I did a PM to Si Si Simona, but he seems to be doing some lurking himself so I hope he gets my PM!

I guess Si Si Simona is still lurking himself because I didn't hear from him and he hasn't posted here!

Si Si must be taking a break. Could you pass on to somebody else and when Si Si returns we'll get them to do one later.

Gee I thought I did a post here already? But it's not here!

I thought I had posted that Si Si was the person I had posted the most in the short time I have been on the Forum and been active on the Forum. I hope someone that has been here longer and been more active can help out by choosing someone else.

I also made the comment that after 18th years of posting on at least one Forum I may be running out of gas? And seeing I didn't even get the post to print I definitely think I'm out of gas!
I'm really trying to hang in and help all of you out because this is such a nice Forum :) And I really want it to do well :D

^Not sure what happened there Rose! There's no record of it but there was a glitch for about 20 minutes yesterday. We're moving over the Vbulletin during next week once Miami is finished.

Si Si can do one when they get back. Anyway, in the meantime I'll choose Kskate2 and the year is 2004.

Ahhh 2004...Pretty good year. Thanks Baron.

It started well, in March I started looking for my first home.

Mid year I bought a townhouse and moved in 4th of July weekend. So I'm hanging drywall and painting to the vocal stylings of Sharapova who screamed her way to a maiden Wimbledon. The next day Federer would defend his maiden slam over A-Rod and the infamous rain delay.

In the fall I went to Europe for the first time. Loved every minute of it:
- Picasso museum in Barcelona, the Olympic village and the Gaudi structures
- South of France and saw the lovely town of Cannes
- Pompeii ruins and a slice from Napoli
- The island of Capri and downed some Lemoncello
- A drive up the Amalfi coast and a stop in Positano
- A quaint drive through the Tuscan countryside and my first gelato
- The Duomo, the David and the Uffizi in Florence
- Ending w/ a trip to Rome to see Michelangelo's masterpiece, Trevi fountain, old Rome and the Spanish Square

Favorite movies that year were Spiderman 2, Bourne Supremacy, Million Dollar Baby and Sideways

A good year for music too: Maroon 5, 3 Doors Down, Usher. Anybody remember Ruben Studdard? :snigger

Here's a medley of the top 25 songs http://www.bobborst.com/popculture/medley/yearend.asp?y=2004

Yo T, you're up next. The year is 1998.

The main thing which comes to mind for 1998 is it was the last time I visited Manhattan prior to Sept. 11, 2001.

Ever since I was little, I had wanted to go to New York City. I was obsessed with it. I finally got the chance to visit the first time in 1983, when I graduated from high school. [Everyone quickly does the math to figure out how old I am. ;) ] It was tremendous. Subsequently, I went every few years.

In 1998, my younger sister was working on Wall Street. Through connections, she was able to get my partner and me complimentary hotel rooms in the Marriott Hotel, which was located in one of the smaller buildings at the base of the World Trade Center. I actually didn't want to stay that far downtown, since it was so far from everything we wanted to do, but it was a nice hotel -- and it was free. We took it. We did spend a small fortune on cabs, though, to go to places like the Guggenheim, the Met, Lincoln Center, etc.

On the final day of our stay, as we were coming back to the hotel after lunch, I looked up at the towers, and suggested we take the express elevators to the top. The view from up there was amazing. I had seen it a few times before on previous trips. You could see all the way up the island, then turn around and see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and well into New Jersey.

Anyway, we quickly decided to skip the trip to the top. "We'll go next time," one of us inevitably said, as we checked out before heading to the airport.

It was the last time I ever saw them.

Ironically, Three World Trade Center, which is the building the Marriott was in, was the first to collapse on Sept. 11. I remember watching it unfold live on TV, thinking, "That's where I stayed last time! I hope everybody was able to get out in time!"

It's hard to think back on that trip, which was a fifth anniversary celebration between my partner and I, without it being overshadowed by events yet to happen, but we really did have a great time. (And, yes, after 20 years, we're still together.)

That was also the year of the Nagano Winter Olympics, the most beautiful city to have hosted them. The snow and conifers were strikingly gorgeous.

For films, it was all about Titanic. I resisted it initially, but have come to love it, despite its flaws. The Truman Show, Deep Impact, and Saving Private Ryan were also released that year. (Spielberg has yet to top Ryan, despite other successes like Munich and Lincoln.)

Sampras won Wimbledon for a fifth time that year, beating Ivanišević in five sets. (Who knew Goran would win it as a wildcard three years later?)

I pass the baton to Denisovich. The year: 1979

OK so 1979 is the pre-Denisovich era I am afraid.... but I can share some things I liked about that year or the things that have to do with 1979.

Firstly, 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins. Great song!

Also, some pretty good movies were made in 1979:

- Apocalypse Now
- Life of Brian
- Escape from Alatraz (I like almost every movie with Clint Eastwood in it)
- Moonraker (ok, not a great movie, but an enjoyable Bond-movie)

Less fun was the Iranian revolution and the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan...

As for tennis, well I can't really comment but Villas won the AO, Borg the RG and Wimbledon, and MacEnroe the US Open. Wooden rackets... yikes

I pass it on to Kiu now, the year is 2011.

Hey Denis,

Britbox asked that if we were too young for the given year, to keep adding five years on til we get a year we can fill. Do you want to try this before handing it on?

No probs if you don't, of course! :)

Allright. I'll share some of my first tennis-memories with you guys. Fast-forward 10 years: 1989. Picked up my first racket as a toddler on the Black tennis grounds in Zimbabwe (Black family, known for Byron, Cara and Wayne Black). I remember the banana-trees around the place, and they had some pretty cool grass-courts too (only for adults if I remember correctly).

Really sucked at tennis though, so stopped playing altogether as a young teenager later. Nowadays, I do play again, but with people who are equally as bad as I am, which makes things nice and competitive. ;)

The year... 2004

Should have picked 2007 so we could have revisited some of the epic debates between hunting and Pete that used to take place on the old forums.

Would have knocked it out of the park like Pujols ;)

First time I take a look at this thread thanks to Baron britbox (claydeath haha)

I was in Korea serving my last year of enlistment, I remember hanging out on new years eve with my military buddies in some college district in Seoul. It was a lot of fun, made a lot of friends and memories but after four years serving I decided to venture into the civilian world (I joined when I was 20 and left college) and move to New Mexico with my wife and 2 year old daughter. Job was good, purchased my first home but before that almost got divorce thanks to.......whatever I was stupid

I always loved watching tennis but my passion growing up was basketball. Thanks to some coworkers I finally decided to give tennis a try myself and purchase an old head racket (radical?). Tennis came kind of naturally for me, the guy I was paying for lessons which was a local star "hated" me because my 1HBH was what he always wanted his to be like.

After Sampras retired I got disconnected from tennis as a fan, I was amazed by Federer but could never care for the guy. A year later I would discover Rafa and you guys know the rest.

One of my favorite movies, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind was release that year.......don't remember much about music though. For Christmas that year I visited my family in PR, always have a blast down there. Anyways that's all........it was a good transition year for me!
