7-5, 6-3, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3. If he were tanking the 3rd and 4th, I'd suggest that you'd have seen the 1-6 as the 4th. Why try so hard in the 4th if you're tanking it, anyway? This account from the time doesn't suggest any tanking or conserving of energy. It went 5 sets because of Stan.
He had a groin strain and when you go down early in a set (especially as badly as he did in set 3 when his groin started getting stiff) it's better to tank. He fought in the 4th obviously to try and close out the match but, again, once he went down he knew he still had the 5th to try and recuperate and there's no point killing yourself to get back on serve when you're down, especially knowing the final would be against Nadal and he'd have to be fresh.
