Sad but not not too sad I missed the Serena v Halep match. Looks like it went basically like one would expect. I actually thought it might be closer. But you definitely can't ever count out someone of Halep's caliber even after they've been drubbed in the first set. She may not be THE most mentally tough player on tour. But she knows as well as anyone that one set is just one set and it doesn't win the match. You start over and go for it again.
I have actually not watched Serena play yet this AO. Looking forward to her match with Pliskova and I think we're all hoping for a rematch with Osaka. But definitely don't count out Svitolina. She's possibly finally believing she can do all this having won the WTA Finals. She has the edge in the h2h. Won both of their matches last year though. Though one was in Miami when Osaka was definitely spent having won IW.
Svitolina has the goods to keep Osaka from coming back if Osaka gets down like she has in a couple matches now. But Osaka definitely has the goods to come back if need be. And the goods to not go down in this one. We'll see.
As for the other two. Big chance for Barty to make her first slam final with the always up and down Kvitova and the winner of the other semi being either Pavlyuchenkova who can hang with and beat the best of the best. But who usually beats herself. And the unproven Collins. Of course the other side of the coin is that the unproven Collins, who had never won a grand slam match before this AO, has just won 4 matches in a row and has looked awesome in all of them. Awesome. I am not inclined to think she can beat Kvitova or Barty. And I think Pavlyuchenkova will beat her. But they've never played. And right about now is usually when Pavlyuchenkova gets antsy and blows it. Collins could be the beneficiary of that. Or, after what we saw her do to Kerber, she could blow Pavlyuchenkova off the court. The point is, we don't know. Like at all. They've never even played. She is the ultimate wildcard. I can't even say she won't be in the final. Which means I can't say she won't win this thing. I don't think that's possible. Especially if Serena gets by Pliskova and her semifinal. But we just don't know and THAT'S SO exciting!!!!
