Well props to Nadal, I figured he'd lose the 5th after blowing the 4th. Thiem showed some game but he has too much Hyde. Poor shot selection and court positioning. Nadal is playing poorly here and is getting run like a rag doll because of it.

WHO YOU PICKING NADAL OR DEL POTRO ?

Del Po usually rolls over for Rafa and he has an attack able backhand but Nadal is going to have to play better. Hope Del Po can save New York.

Oh, c'mon... Thiem did not choke that match. The narrative is getting silly with the choking stuff.

Thiem had to be very aggressive to have any chance of winning this match. He's not going to beat Nadal playing low-risk percentage tennis. He went after his shots - sometimes he missed - shit happens.

The shot he played into the corner would have been a winner 9 times out 10 on the tour. Nadal getting that shot back into play and not making it easy was on Nadal not Thiem.

Strangely, I too thought Thiem will win this after it went to fifth set. After digging himself out from the hole of 0-40 while serving at 5-5 (especially the point in which he had to smash three times to win was great), he finally found a way to choke in the TB. This after coming back from behind twice in that TB. That got to sting big time.

New York saved itself, when the rubber met the road. We don't need your ridiculous opinion of what it takes to save us.

Rafa has 2 full days to recover but Juan Martin has also less mileage in this tournament so far...

Ya, Choke is a big word. But, I don't know whether you noticed. Thiem has a tendency to redline (and miss many times) when it is totally unnecessary as the opponent is so far away from where he is trying to place. In such situations having better margins is wise way to go.
I am not saying this happened in the last point. But, it happened too many times during the match.

But, I agree that in general he needed to be aggressive.

Relax buddy as the long 5 hour match vs Thiem is going to take its toll. Del Po in straight sets.

Choking may be harsh but he did piss away the third set for sure but he did well to hang in there after that. Rafa was probably the better player for much of the 4th set and all the 5th.

I still don't like his game much on HC, too much of a ballbasher and just gets out of position too much. He doesn't anticipate shots well at all and that's something Nadal took advantage of a lot. Nadal is serving poorly and not really hitting the ball well this tournament. Taking it to 5 against this version of Nadal isn't some big moral win. This isn't some big breakthrough or anything.

I hope you're right but Nadal has two days off and unlimited stamina and will. His game is weak this tourney though, bad serve and having to stand in New Jersey on his return games. He will have to step it up and hopefully he won't.

I think most would disagree that it wasn't a big match for Thiem going forward.

It is terrible. No use staying up so late and watching.

Got to get up in less than five hours to go to work.

If Ralph has lost at least I would not have nightmares.

Nadal had that volley in the 4th set that would have given him MP.

They were gimmees missed on both sides but kudos to both players that they both came roaring back from what could have been crestfallen mini setbacks.
