Not throwing a pity party for Thiem -- he was disappointing -- BUT his comment, while the usual complimentary cliche, puts things in perspective. He said that Rafa winning 11 FO's is one of the most outstanding achievements in sport, which is obvious enough. But b/c of that, how can we blame these players for being tight or lacking belief? (cont')

Imagine being a player at 24 and struggling to even reach a major final. And the guy across you has won the tournament 10 fucking times. How can you NOT doubt your chances?

I think he meant "disappointed." As in, in his own performance. Rosewall is short, btw.

Rosewall is an old skooler, says it how he thinks it is. If they wanted political correctness then they should have invited Billie Jean King to make the speech.

I might make a thread about that. The expectations, and how we, as outsiders may not fully grasp nerves and belief. We're in awe of Nadal but we don't play the game. Imagine being a tennis pro, unbelievably talented, and realizing how difficult it is to win a major, let alone 16. And you're playing against that guy. You'll have doubts

That's why it's tough when people here sometimes criticize the opponents for being such chumps, not looking at what they're up against. Do make that thread.

It would be somewhat classy for Federer and Nadal to just retire while they are still capable of winning. So the young can taste the victory for themselves

I went for a run during that rain delay v. Schwartzman and I really thought Rafa's RG might be over.

I thought Thiem gave it a good go... the bottom line is simple... these players aren't quite good enough.

I think Thiem performance wasnt as poor as some may think..he put a lot of pressure on Nadal but the king of clay's defense was too fierce..Man, i was really concerned about the cramping late in the 3set and the removal of the tape was crucial to get the blood flow expedited..Whew..

honestly, even at almost 37 old Rodge would've scored more games than Thiem which shows how the young players just aren't good enough

Also, his first final...he was tight. Any players nightmare is finally make a final and see Rafa at RG or Roger at W across the net.

Careful there, Front. Roger has won fewer games than Thiem in this final.
