Congrats to Ostapenko. I think she will be alright. Did she win anything before? How many players won a Slam as their first tournament win? Can't be many.
I did see a couple of things i did not like though...looking at the box every time something debatable happened. Reminded me of Arantxa Sanchez. Not good. I hope it is not a habit.

It was her 17th match in a Grand Slam only Pam shriver has made a slamtitel quicker
It was her first title and a slam as well first since 1979 Australian Open Barbara Jordan
In RG she's made 299 winners and probably as many unforced errors - today 56 - 56
Youngest player winning RG in 20 years
First unseeded player to win RG in the open era (started 1968) and first since 1933
First player to win her maiden RG title since Gustavo Kuerten won - on the day Ostapenko was born!

So an exciting player hard to beat if she can control her game.

Not that I care, but I was shocked to hear Halep blew another one! I just can't understand; no lead is safe with some players I guess!

She didn't have THAT much of a lead really. A set and 3-0 but 3-0 is hardly panic stations given how often they break serve in WTA matches. Halep came back to beat Svitolina from a set and 5-1 down so she herself was lucky to still be in the tournament today.

Who's the veteran and within sniffing distance of being #!? Halep's like so many of today's players who just can't finish; even when it's all set up for you! There's no Serena, no Kerber who's been upset; couldn't have had it better with a rookie player with no tournament wins! That's sad to allow herself to be broken so many times! This is a major final and I'm not sure watchable with all those breaks of serve!

To be honest ANY big hitter would have beaten her today imo. She doesn't handle them well and was lucky Pliskova didn't play her best or she'd have beaten her instead. If I was betting on a match with Halep v a big hitter I'd back the big hitter every time. And Ostapenko herself could have served much better and made less errors too and won easier than she did.

Congratulations to young thing Jalena! :drums:

Almost every point was decided by her (one way or other).

Simona has no chance in other grandslams. I thought this being clay court, her defensive game will win the trophy especially against a rookie. But, there is no question that Jalena fully deserves it for fighting back to a win. I hope she builds on a good career on top of this win and does not vanish like many other one time wonder WTA folks (most recent being the OG winner from whom we have not heard anything after that).

I heard that this is Jalena's first title per se. That makes it even more amazing. Does anyone know who was the last person (man or woman) to win a GS as their first title?

108 of 196 points ended on Osta's racquet one way or other (54 winners to 54 unforced errors). That is a whopping 55% of total points.

Ostapenko just become a millionnaire a few days after her 20th birthday too. Between that and the sponsorship she'll now get, it's a real ticket to the big league from today

Thanks, missed your previous post. At least it has happened before, even though long time ago.

I hope Osta won't have a let down like most players do after winning big. I think she will keep it together and avoid a long slump.

Do you think because she has won the Wimbledon juniors that she will carry over he recent momentum to the grass courts? Jelena seems to be very hungry and has instantly become the new darling of women's tennis, IMO. I sure hopes she able to capture a lot more titles.

It's obvious aside from service motion problems that she was coached very well by her mom. I think having that support will help carry the momentum for the rest of the year. I would not be surprised to see her make top 8 and get to play the year end tournament.

I wish that the younger Americans can emulate Serena and win big events....oops they are busy hating on her.Keys wants Julia Roberts to play her in a movie,Scone is full of bitterness,Coco is just a big loudmouth with nothing to show for it,Townsend needs to lose weight...
