God, I hate it. Rog will be playing at 5 a.m. EST. When he plays a qualifier why can't they schedule him for day session so that I can watch it at 7 p.m.

I remember the year Safin beat Sampras in the fourth round, I think, it was 2002, and the match started about 8am here. I was to leave for work at 8.30, so obviously I was hoping it was over quick :snicker but the warm up alone brought the match beginning to 8.15.

Safin won the first two sets and I was still at home - "bringing the missus to the hospital, you wouldn't believe what happened!" - then Pete began a surge and took the third.

Text messages from work: "commiserations on the missus, hope she recovers", "what hospital is she in, we'll send flowers, etc".

Fourth set was a dogfight so I rang them to tell them my mother was gonna be okay.

"Thought it was your wife?"

On a big point in the tiebreak, Sampras clipped the net cord with a forehand, and it fell back on his side. "&@*!"

A liar needs a good memory, but a tennis fan just needs the ball to clear the net, and it'll be okay. Pete went down in four, and it was tetchy and salty between them at the end. Afterwards he was asked about that, and classy as ever, he said he noticed nothing. It brought it home to me the cruelty and stupidity and thoughtlessness of Aussie scheduling. This was the year that Safin lost the final to Johansson, with two Russian bimbos in the players box. He looked exhausted before he even hit a ball...

Fantastic story..:clap..Dude..I remember Safin brought his Russian call girls., that was historic and he was too worn out to defeat Tommy Johan..(joined plus Gustain Gaudio both who should have never won a slam but they did)

Don't you people think this Australian open surface is actually a pretty sleek surface? Damn, it's quick. Is it due to day conditions?

Murray finding it difficult to tackle Marchenko. This guy has been more aggressive. Murray should win it in three though.

Some young guns won their first round matches: Alexander Bublik, Andrey Rublev, and Alex De Minaur.

I was predicting that Rublev would break through last year but was disappointed. I think he's got good potential, but he stalled last year. Hopefully he can rise quickly this year.

Wawrinka in real trouble, 3-3 in the fifthh and facing break point ... Oh Stan.

Fed takes the first set 7-5 against Melzer. From the scores it doesn't look as though he did it the easy way (getting broken earlier in the set but breaking straight back). Hopefully he can win this in straight sets, and a little easier. Jürgen is no spring chicken himself so I'm not sure that I can see him knocking Fed out. However, Roger really could do with not expending too much energy early on.

Speaking of which - 4-3 Klizan. Oh Stan.

I agree. The surface looks faster than usual. Fed's serve was really good in the 1st set and I am assuming its due to the surface.

Actually, the match is going pretty fast if you think about it - less than an hour, and already up a set and a break, 3-1.

Fed seems to have warmed up a bit. His shirt is atrocious though. :puzzled

Stan breaks back and then holds. 5-4 in the decider

Wawrinka wins in the end. There was a point where he tried to kneecap Klizan with a volley. :puzzled
