Great win for Novak. My stream is so far behind. No trophies yet.

Really hope that Fed can pick up Wimbledon no. 9 here someday. Tat window is closing fast though. Maybe one more chance.

Hate to say it but after this match even I am thinking Roger might be done winning the big ones. Still has hope for 18

He'll have another shot here next year. I think he's done winning at the AO, FO and USO.

he did come close-ish to the USO last year. AO/FO seem even more unlikely. anyway - haven't we had this conversation one time too many by now? ;)

Not really because the circumstances change after every major.

Novak is very gracious and kind. Beating Roger here is about as special as it gets. IT is the cathedral of tennis. Guess only beating Nadal in Paris can be put in the same category and Novak did both this year. Wining at SW19 really is winning the Championships of the year--no doubt! This is true for Roger and Rafa and Novak--it is the most meaningful.

am i in before the chat gets copied in here? ... anyway: congratulations to the better man. well deserved win today. it's frustrating because Fed was so close. but it's not just the clutch that mattered for Novak - he was just better, and he's a deserved #1.

first man to defend his Wimby title since Fed, and first time he's defended any slam title, am i right?

Any? Seek help my friend! He owns AO! :lolz::laydownlaughing :nono  :cover - Won 3 straight and 5 overall; the most in the OPEN era!
sorry, that was embarassing :)

first time he defends a slam other than AO (like Rafa with FO)... i knew there was some stat like that.

that said, who really ever defends more than one slam? well done, Novak, well done.

DarthFed,
Federer's chance of winning another Major was done after 2012. His best chance was last year at the US Open and he ran out of gas. Nadal is done physically or so it seems and Roger is done mentally. He does not play big points well. How many straight forward forehands did he hit into the net today that were just ordinary straight forward strokes. Goodness we could have made an audio of the sound of the ball hitting the net. He did not play badly. He runs out of gas. Personally I thought Novak played well, but Fed had more chances this year than he did last. Djokovic was good but not great. This match could have been much worse.

Stuff can happen. You never know. But it looks like he has enough in the tank for a solid 6 rounds of play. It is the 7th that is the issue...

Maybe Djokovic is the bigger issue.

He got to the finals well rested. He just needed to win the 1st set. This looks a lot different if he wins that one IMO. I think that goes for any slam going forward, if he doesn't win the 1st he's probably done against any of the top guys.

He IS a big issue, that's for sure, but Roger beats him here and there. It is beating him in a best of 5 at the 7th match of a slam that is the big issue.

He used up all the mental energy fighting for the 2nd. If he was sharper from the start the situation is different. I was stunned how bad they both played the 1st set. But Roger's had his chances many times after 2012. At the end of the day he isn't tough enough on the big stage anymore aside from last year's final which he really did well in.

I think he makes another USO final. But he is probably done at Wimbledon, this one will sting, getting beaten that badly.

I'd still fancy Federer to beat anyone in a major final other than Djokovic and Nadal. Even now.

Great win for Djoker, and a fierce effort by Roger. It was a great four set match and the more deserving man won. As Rafa might say, happy for Novak! :clap

I think the key is Roger isn't very good at this point at picking his battles. There were a couple of times where Novak was 40-0 or 40-15 and he fought back to deuce, but didn't break. If you make the conscious decision to fight back and expend energy, then you need to win those points.

I am not going to say Roger can't win another slam, but a perfect storm has to happen. I mean right now with Nadal hugging the toilet with his game, Murray failing in the latter stages Roger couldn't ask for better opportunity. He just needs to play those opportunities better. I mean if someone can take out Djokovic early at the U.S. Open, then I would say Roger has a shot. He just can't let a Marin Cilic situation happen.
