Question for all. Do we now have a Big Five? Something to ponder.

I wouldn't say that, but we have a more volatile, unpredictable and healthy tour than we've had for a long time. You get a bloke like Stan - who's an excellent player - playing at such a level to deny Novak, and then look at the US Open, and last year we had four different winners at each slam, this year two different winners so far, it's a much more open and competitive sport now...

Think, think, think! it's not so hard to understand it :p

I've never been on the same wavelength as Nadal fans I'm afraid. They think differently on every level :)

Yep, definitely we think differently on every level

Btw, who picked Wawrinka in four sets? Whomever he or she is, that was a good prediction!

It was August.

Does anyone have the winners count?

I feel the difference was so big it would have prompted Cali to make a thread calling Novak talentless and DarthFed to relegate Novak to a "grinder" on his official player label list.

I think Stan was in the forties and Novak was less than half that. The last one I saw was at about 4-4 in the fourth, Stan on 41 and Novak on 19, I think...

CORRECTION: 60-30 for Stan. I must have read the winners off one wing...

Oh boy, double the amount of winners? Someone unban Cali.

"The thief thinks that everyone is like him" nope! :ras: :nono :lolz:

I don't even know what that means.

She means you celebrated when Rafa lost and you think Rafa fans will do the same now that Novak lost. In your defense, you're right.

But not the way that they celebrate the Nadal's loss putting salt in the wound in every single comment :cover

That's a tough one. The fact that Stan has been able to beat an all time great at his peak speaks well of him. But no shame for Roddick being unable to beat the monster of all monsters at his peak. 2009 was definitely his chance though. I'm always wary of this because Roddick I would assume has won far more titles than Stan. And he was a consistent contender for years

Not for me anyway. Still too early.

Roddick won a lot of titles and ended with a winning h2h over Novak and I genuinely felt sorry for him that he never won Wimbledon. Same as Federer against Nadal at RG, Roddick lost to the very best on grass and would've won multiple titles there otherwise. Imo he's still well ahead of Stan. People remember Roddick's last days more than his early days where his forehand was an absolute beast like Roger's but like most players the biggest asset is lost with age and his forehand ended up passive and pretty pedestrian just like Roger's is these days. Back in his prime though he handed many losses to the top players. He even beat Roger a few times and got to world number 1 which I doubt Stan ever will.

They even made a film about him http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0296572

Or wait, maybe that was about someone else :snicker

Roddick was definitely a more consistent tennis player and had the misfortune of having no chance against Federer who was the worst possible match-up for him. No player's (lack of) all-time great status is as associated with another player like Roddick. Not that Roddick would have been a grade A all-time great, but he would have been a 4-5 time Grand Slam winner which is pretty respectable. He was also far more consistent than Stan.

That said, Wawrinka definitely has the higher ceiling and is capable of the higher "highs," as evidenced by actually being able to beat the top players in the world, something that Roddick wasn't. Yes, beating Nadal at the AO or Djokovic at the FO is not the same as beating Federer at Wimbledon, but Stan at least has the game to where you can envision him catching fire and doing it in any situation, Roddick doesn't.

This.

Stan catches fire and he can match up well against anyone.

Stick to discussing the match. Anything involving other users, such as Cali, isn't anyone else's business.

He still has to get there! He goes out "early" a lot more often than make a major final! He has a lot going for him, but he's waited "so late" in his career to have this success it will be fleeting I'm sure! :dodgy:
