I wish she had played a second match and then withdrew. I am hoping Stanford gets the axe as well. I think if anything we might see something along the lines of what happened with her clay prep in the tournaments before the French Open mirror her hard court preparation before the U.S. Open.
If she really has problems with that elbow, and until proven otherwise I have no reason to doubt her, that probably wasn't an option. Besides, as a matter of principle I'm not a fan of dropping out midway through tournaments unless you are injured.

I didn't realize Serena is supposed to play WTT Monday and Tuesday and a charity event for Vika next Friday on top of her other scheduled tournaments! Only thing I have to say is fix it, Patrick!

I told you she had a lot of commitments all happening one after the other. Besides, this is what I meant about not playing this tournament. Play a match, fulfill your promise and get the heck out of dodge. She's no spring chix. She's got to be sore and tired from 2 full weeks of some tough matches.

If her team gets over ambitious and run her into the ground, I'm going to be pissed. Serena needs to be smart about this too. Surely she will cut back. Right?

One can only hope Patrick is seeing the big pic ending at the USO.

Both Patrick and Serena place the blame of over-scheduling on her shoulders. Serena has a mind of her own and usually does what she wants to do. Poor Patrick is along for the ride like every one else, lol.

This is true. Hard to imagine anyone telling Serena what to do. Who can talk some sense into her then? Her mom? Venus? Caroline?

Bastad is called Collector Swedish Open, as people show up and collect appearance fee.

I really do think this will play out like her French Open prep where she played one tournament deep in Madrid and played a match in Rome pulling out of the event. I can see her doing that with her summer depending on how she is feeling.

Also, I hope Nike has a decent outfit for her to wear this US Open befitting of the occasion. I have been very underwhelmed by their output lately.

It is important for Serena to lose a match before USO (of course, not voluntarily) to relieve the pressure before USO begins.

I imagine they are thinking that simply not playing Cincy is enough time off... It's not.

She's in a position where it's best not to sign up for too many events. If she feels the urge or the need to play more than originally planned she can always ask for a wild card. It's not as though they would refuse her one, and it's better than having people expecting her to be there for months and than at the last minute having to cancel.

Despite getting to the final again, Barthel unable to defend her title. Congrats to Johanna for pulling a double. She wins her maiden title after reaching the finals a few times in her home tournament. :clap

Is that...a pig on top of the trophy? A pig with wings?

When pigs fly...

Well I'm still a little undecided as we've had this discussion for 2 years running:
