Serena is the top seed and probably got a really large fee to appear here again. Defending champ is Mona Barthel who is in the draw again.

Serena comes through her opening match rather quickly 6-2 6-1, but Stosur goes down in flames to an unseeded Spaniard Arruabarrena 7-6 6-0.

Serena definitely looks tired. I hope she skips Stanford.

Me, too. I can't imagine her going through with the schedule she has set up. I thought she was going to pull back some. If she is serious about winning the calendar slam, she needs to knock a couple of those tournaments off her list.

she should drop Stanford and just play Toronto which has some pace and feel as Arthur Ashe...then probably add Cincy..

Nothing to do with this thread, but got reminded by the name kokkulova. Whatever happened to a Russian (I think) player by name Zakapulova (or something close to it) and I believe her first name is Klara.

Tossip is right. Zako is Koukalova. She married a hockey player or footballer. Can't remember what he does.

I wish she had played a second match and then withdrew. I am hoping Stanford gets the axe as well. I think if anything we might see something along the lines of what happened with her clay prep in the tournaments before the French Open mirror her hard court preparation before the U.S. Open.

I didn't realize Serena is supposed to play WTT Monday and Tuesday and a charity event for Vika next Friday on top of her other scheduled tournaments! Only thing I have to say is fix it, Patrick!

Wow she needs to get some rest. Bastad was on her schedule since last year. The tournament made back all their money in one day anyway. During Serena's match that place was pack to capacity. She's going to be wanted all over the place now because of her record, but she has to say NO to some of these engagements.

Well I do think she will pull out of one of the tourneys. My guess would be Toronto or Cincy. Gut tells me Toronto as she defends less there and she is defending champ at Cincy. She better be careful overworking leaves the body susceptible to illness and injury.

All the tickets for Cincy are sold out.
