Great match for Serena. Now she's made her first semifinal at a slam for the year. Will she make the final? Most likely. But Makarova is playing solid tennis. She's definitely got a better chance than Panetta did. BUT, Serena will still feast on her second serve.

With the people left in the draw, Serena is the outright favorite. But then she's been the favorite all week since it became clear that she is playing well. But it won't be a cake walk. She'll most likely be dealing with Wozniacki in her second slam final. Wozniacki has played Serena close in Cincy and Montreal, taking a set both times. It was closer the first time in Montreal though. So hopefully Serena will be even more locked in this time and it won't be that close at all. I'd hate for this to be the time for Wozniacki to get the upset. If Peng somehow finds a way to beat the woman she's lost to 5 times in a row, she could be a bit of a surprise for Serena, but Serena has played and beaten her 3 times and never lost a set and Peng has never won a title anywhere. You gotta think in her first slam final she'll be more nervous than Serena will.

And yes, what I'm worried about mostly is Serena getting nervous against Makarova or Wozniacki who actually have what it takes to beat her. Because it seems to me that she's been struggling at the slams this year because she's nervous because she wants #18 so bad. And at this slam she's also going for her first slam three-peat ever. It's only the second time in her career she even has a shot at it, having lost the first attempt to Sharapova in the Wimbledon final in 2004. So nerves are something I'm worried about. But she's been making herself play solid and stay calm all tournament. If anyone can do it from here on out it's Serena.

So here's to #18. But if she doesn't get it, her consolation prize will be what these commentators mentioned, that she's the first 32 year old to make the semis here since Navratilova in 1991. She made it to the final. Hopefully Serena will follow suit but take it one step further and actually win that final.

Pam Shriver asks silly questions....

all the time. did you hear what she asked Sara yesterday?
I usually change the channel as soon as the match is over,Shriver is trying to put pressure on Serena by talking about Nav and Evert.

Yesterday she put Sara on the spot during the pre-match interview in the tunnel. Just complete idiocy.

Is that me or did Pennetta seem a bit unfocused? Spotted her running away from a ball instead of hitting it when she was close enough to hit O.o

I think of all of the women left in the draw Serena is the one who can only improve in her game at this point. I think all the other women are pretty maxed out at their capabilities at this point and don't have that extra gear.

Why is it that these line people always calling Serena on Foot faults at the US Open. It seems as though they do it intentionally. Can someone tell me if anyone else has been call on a foot fault during this Open or is that only reserved for Serena.

What's with the USO and calling it foot faults? You see it here more than any other major, I'd say.

Only on Serena I might add.

The other night during Federer's match, his opponent, Roberto Bautista Agut, had at least two foot faults. Someone else did the other night, too, but I can't remember who. Wawrinka or Nishikori, I think.

Wrong. It's not just Serena. I've seen other people get called as well. I remember a few years ago Roddick got called for one and he actually went a little ballistic.

^ Another player that comes to mind regarding being called for foot faults is Lleyton Hewitt as well.

I was going to mention him, but I didn't see his match. But, yes, he's the most notorious for this of all players, men and women.

Could anyone name any other female player other than Serena. Like I said this only happens to Serena. You can't tell me that this is not planned.

So is it planned against Hewitt? Bautista Agut? Wawrinka?

Or Safin? He blew a gasket a few years back by getting called on them. "Planned" sounds a bit paranoid, btw. My post where I asked what it was with the USO and foot faults was made because I do think they call them more than you seem to see at other tournaments, (which is a purely anecdotal observation,) but they call them against lots of players. (Roddick was mentioned, as well.)

That's kinda lame back-tracking. Several people have provided examples of prominent players getting called for FFs at the US Open in the last 10 years.

I just think it's outrageous to even be that close to the line; even if a "S & V'r!" Back when I was 19 playing in the finals of a club tournament, my father let me know I was foot-faulting and I henceforth stepped back with no loss of effectiveness! Why in the world are these people who almost never go into the net stand so close? It's the most ridiculous thing to see again and again with the pros; then have the nerve to gripe about being called out on it! :s :puzzled :nono
