Nole needs to stay focused, his habit of relaxing could be very costly, not here, but in the following matches

Rose

No surprise here! And I didn't know at least one Canadian got through today until I saw the new thread :cover

Yes, I agree. But mitigating circumstances. I understand he settled a bit too much after having going through this serving ordeal for two sets.

Anyways, good match still.

Gulbis will a different but equally difficult challenge.

Ernie started the 3rd set by breaking Tomas again!

Good job here Nole:clap

Be Careful my friend what's you ask for (a victory by Gulbis)

I know, he said after he won, this is probably the best match he has played.
I wish Ernie was on the other side of the draw:(

I think it will be more difficult, apparently Ernie's bullets were re-painting the lines

My hopes are that Novak will bring enough back to make Ernie start painting the net and the outside of the court. ;) It will be mentally less taxing, but a bigger challenge tennis-wise IMO.

Raonic still look out of his depth in baseline rallies against these guys.

I know he does, but he has improved a lot, thus he wins a few rallies, while two years ago he won none.
Also, with him, the rallies are just occasional, in general they do not happen most of the times.
I would have not thought a year ago that it would be clay where he will achieve his first QF in a slam.

This was one of the most boring matches of the tournament, in fact, one of the most boring matches I've watched all year. I don't mind Raonic and I understand that big servers have their place in tennis as it's one of the distinctive styles of play, and people like to see how different guys with different styles stack up, but christ is it tedious at times.

I think Raonic took Nole out over the summer at one of the Masters before the USO! I'll look it up! Maybe I'm just remembering another tall server like John Isner!

Djokovic lost to Isner in Cincy. He played Raonic for the first time in the Davis Cup last year and won in straight sets.

I thought it was a superb match from Nole. I'm amazed at the improvement in Raonic. His baseline play gets better and better. He could do some work with his returns. Odd that he had more difficulty with Novaks second serve. Reminds me of Roger and Rafa's second serve. The scary thing about Raonic is that he's proved to me that he only needs a little bit more improvement and then he's going to be very very tough for anyone to handle. But Nole... to take him out like that was super impressive. I'm not booking him into the final just yet, but if anyone can exploit the Gulbis forehand it's Nole. I'm happy with Gulbis' performance because Roger is not looking so terrible!
