Sid called him a cheat, actually a "cheet" so maybe that's not as extreme

Nole had the chance to put this right when shown on the big screen, but he did not.

Just ignore everything Novak said and blame him. Novak didn't need a big screen, he freely conceded that he passed the net in front of the umpire, hence why Andy said "he says he was over the net" (paraphrase).

When you're right, you're right. Thank you for presenting a strong argument, and bringing these new facts to light. You have really re-framed the situation in a wholly different context. :clap:s

But clearly the umpire doesn't know the rules. Doesn't surprise me. I used to do my manager's job for 12 years 'cos he's a dumb POS.

Brother, getting you to do his job for 12 years shows he maybe cleverer than you think. ;) I had a manager like that and I schemed my way into his job after four years...

Our department consolidated the work back to the home office in Miami and the company are now closing the subsidiary over here later this year and bringing the work to the UK, otherwise I'd have given it a shot :) I didn't want his job tbh 'cos I was paid almost as much as him after years of service and career path progressions and I was happy with what I got paid for a cushy number :) In retrospect I'll probably never have it as easy anywhere else. Most jobs start out hard but after 14 years it was a piece of cake and money for nothing :) Pity not chicks for free

^ Yeah, he clearly said his racquet was over the net so when the umpire heard that he should've said, sorry I saw it differently from this angle but if you honestly say your racquet was on Andy's side of the net then by the rulebook I have to award the point to Andy. And that should've been it, done and dusted.

Lets say he award that point to Andy I bet Novak would have lost it maybe even broke his tennis racquet.

That's only a guess. Let's say Novak got the point for 5-2 when he touched the net at RG last year, there's no saying he would've won anyway, although he'd have been in a very good position to do so. I don't believe in fantasy tennis. Let's say Federer played the whole match against Nishikori like he did in set 1, even serving 47% he'd have mangled him but in the real world he didn't.

For the record, I'm always hesitant to blame players for not pointing something out to the umpire. Hell, I thought people were too harsh on Raonic in the net debacle last year. It's an umpire's job to do his job (shocking, I know). If he doesn't, then we should be blaming him. Now if Novak indeed knew what he did was illegal and didn't say anything, then that's unfortunate but ultimately, I honestly might have done the same in that scenario.

I highly doubt Novak knew. Otherwise he would have let the ball just go into the net.

In the heat of the moment, it was probably a brain fart. I don't think it was a deliberate attempt at cheating especially since the volley was so simple that he could have waited a split second longer till the ball crossed the net. I think he just messed up. But again, I would be absolutely shocked if he didn't know it was illegal.

Think about it. It's literally one of the most basic rules in tennis: Each player has their side of the court.

Players are used to calling points long before they hit the big time and have the pleasure of umpires and line judges. An 8 year old junior knows if you touch the net you're conceding the point. The same junior will know if you're playing the ball on the wrong side of the net then you concede the point. Sure, some are border-line in the latter case but this particular instance appeared to be as obvious as you can get. I don't buy the "playing dumb" get out clause.

If he knew it, why did he do it then? Did you even see the point?

Are you seriously suggesting that he couldn't possibly have been just a tad over-zealous and got too eager so he messed up? Nobody's saying this was some elaborate scheme.

I don't think Novak should have conceded the point, he earned it. This makes it different from the Robredo situation. Just wasn't being a lawyer at the net. If anything, imagine the ump had given the point to Murray, it would have been sportsmanlike for Andy to concede it actually.

How? Novak broke the rules, and therefore didn't earn the point. It should have been given against him.

By the way, I don't blame him for the furore, mini though it is...

A Nadal fan talking about breaking the rules... :s

Rafa takes too long. Throw the rulebook at him. I never defend it. It's up to umps. And I applaud players who get in his face about it, and I always say this.

Nor should you defend Nole taking a point he lost. The point isn't over til it's over. That point was Murray's and there's no justification for giving it to Nole - or even saying he "earned it..."

Nadal structurally violates the rules. Djokovic was being careless. The ump should have given Murray the point. You guys are being ridiculous in requiring Novak to chair and play tennis too.

Read my post on page 10. I explicitly said I might have done the same as Novak (ie take the point). I'm not saying he should have chaired. I'm saying there's no way a 6 time GS champion doesn't understand one of the most basic rules in tennis. I'd honestly be worried if he didn't.
