Nadal in straights. Moxie, this time the serve does get broken, but he gets the break back.

I voted for Richie in 5 but it's to cheer him up...I don't believe in my own vote but it would be a nice surprise if he won

Why bother voting if you don't believe in it?

This is when Gasquet destroyed Nadal, but that was only because he was serving withing 10 seconds back then (4 to 11 times faster than these days) and he didn't have that butt picking routine that he obviously developed later in adolescence.

Yes, I have posted it already in past, but thought it may be appropriate to refresh everyone's memory. According to Nole the most talented of his generation is Gasquet and this video doesn't contradict it.

...years of winning nothing on tour, as well as a 0-10 record against Nadal however, does.

That's super-cute, Mastoor, and thanks for sharing. I'm not sure that the particular clip shows Gasquet to his best advantage, however. Anyway, there is a difference between potential talent, and realized talent. Even Richard realizes that he's being rather ironic when he mentions that this was the last time he beat Rafa. He's going to have to come up with something very special to prevail on Saturday.

This (as for as Gasquet is going to have to come up with something Special)

Doesn't mean he is not the most talented. Nalbandian is the most physically talented of his generation next to Federer, but he has underperformed.

Hell No.. Safin had more physical talent than Nalbandian and maybe close to Federer..

Seriously people, Gasquet is not winning this. It will be an underwhelming semifinal unfortunately. I am not even watching. I hope No1e can beat Stan, so we have blockbuster final (that one I will watch).

I mean what is Gasquet going to do? He lacks the power, aggressiveness and consistency needed to defeat Nadal.

Of course Gasquet isn't winning. I am just defending that he is an immensely naturally talented player, who did not develop nearly as well after juniors.

Agreed. Not sure what folks (who think Gasquet will do anything other than be beaten badly) are smoking, but Richie will be sent home, quickly.

Hmmm, for a second there I thought this was a rib on Cali. I won't go into the Nalbandian thing, but as far as Gasquet is concerned, seeing as he's a part of the Nadal/Djokovic/Murray generation, just how exactly can he be the most talented? If he was beating them at 14 (which we don't even know, we only have one Youtube video), that doesn't absolutely mean he's more talented. It just means he was better then. I know what's the argument founded on (Gasquet beating them then means he's more talented, but it could be that they went on to work harder and achieved greater things while he didn't develop). Well then, how do you know that they just didn't develop as fast as he did at 14? Maybe he was working harder then while for some reason or another they didn't. For instance, at such a young age, the quality of your opponents matters greatly as far as how fast you improve. Perhaps Gasquet was playing better players more consistently then, and thus his game developed faster.

It's just extremely rich to call a player with zero slams and zero masters 1000 events more talented than two all-time greats with a combined 18 slams between them, and another 2 time Grand Slam champion. Especially when all 3 of those players have dominated Gasquet badly on the tour. Plus, with that forehand of his, I really don't see how he can be more talented. He's got way more obvious limitations to his game than the three of them combined.

I enjoy Gasquet's game tremendously, but I really think he's in the running for "most overrated player" in recent memory. Much of the ravings about his talent are strictly based on the aesthetic appeal of his backhand. I really think if his backhand was just as potent, only happened to be a two hander, people wouldn't be praising him so vehemently.

For the record, this doesn't necessarily mean that Gasquet hasn't under-performed in his career, nor am I suggesting that he's absolutely made the most out of his talent. But the most talented player of his generation he is not, with all due respect to what Novak claimed. Keep in mind, Djokovic once said that he couldn't win games off of Ernests Gulbis when they were younger. I doubt you'll hear anyone call the Latvian more talented. Novak is a nice guy, he's just showering them with praise.

Just defending mastoor/novak that it is not an insane idea like you are implying. I doubt he is the most talented of his gen, but I don't think it's impossible or crazy.

That's the most insightful comment I've ever read about him. We can't prove your hypothesis, of course, but it instantly struck me as true.
