Vicky is lovely. I'm glad she stayed in there and didn't beat herself in the TB. Elena has become a full-time choke artist. It's a difficult thing to overcome when everyone in the locker room knows you can't close. Poor child, needs to dump that ole man and hire a shrink so she can get her mojo back.

Well done to Gauff/Kessler who are the Doubles Champions in Monteral defeating the 3rd seeds Townsend/Zhang 64 16 13-11
I thought after the 2nd set Townsend/Zhang had the momentum, they did have a mini break early in the TB, not to be.
Good. Maybe now, she can take some of those proceeds and get those naps permed.

Naomi stood tough in the TB down a mini break, making her first WTA1000 final since 2022
Tauson had a great tournament making the SF of a WTA1000, hopefully she can take all the positives from Monteral into Cincinnati

Also I forget to post
Vicky Mboko is now 34 in the live rankings. Considering Vicky was No 333 at the beginning of the season what great results she has had to date

WTA1000 Monteral
Ladies Singles Final,
Thursday August 7th,

Naomi Osaka vs Vicky Mboko WC This is their first meeting,

This final is a final of firsts in retrospect Naomi Osaka reaching her first WTA1000 final since 2022
Vicky Mboko WC reaching her first WTA1000 final.

Vicky received a late wild card into the Monteral tournament and boy did she show tournament officials they were wise to grant her a wild card regardless of the fact she is Canadian. On her way to the final Vicky defeated 3 former Grand Slam champions in Kenin, Gauff and Rybakina,
Vicky plays an aggressive game of tennis, good solid serve, great fhand, moves well, also can move to the net and play good volleys, she also showed in that 3rd set TB in the SF against Rybakina, she went for her shots and played fearless tennis for an 18 yo she is mature beyond her years and also fights and dosent give up.

Naomi Osaka has showed in Monteral shades of why she is a GS champion of 4 titles, her game suits the hard courts, also she has a new coach in Tomaz Wiktorowski, who had a lot of success with Iga Swiatek.Osaka now has a live ranking of 29 after her win against Svitolina which puts her in seeding range at the USO

At the start of this tournament noone would have predicted that these 2 ladies would be in the final, quite frankly they both have out shone the men in their Canadian tournament in Toronto!

Good luck to both Naomi and Vicky!

Osaka's timing of the ball has been 'on' since the start of the match
Vicky having 2 DFs didnt help her cause
Vicky's needs to play one point at a time and she gets on the SB with a lovely fh winner right on the line
Osaka leads 4-1 1st set
Vicly's idol growing up was Osaka, Osaka was told that in her press conference yesterday
Osaka gets another break and wins the 1st 62, Vicky too many UFE in that first set

Mboko wins the title! Cinderella story of the year. I love Osaka, but she got petulant at the end, as she can. She's been at the top, but she has to earn it back. She can't expect it to be handed to her, even when all of the obvious competition seemed to have been eliminated. Allez, Mboko! A star is born.

Agreed. She let Vicky boss her in that 2nd set. Then she took that massive potty break and it allowed the girl to practice her serve all that time. It'll be a lesson for sure in how to deal w/ the crowd too. As long as Naomi was grooving, she held the crowd at bay. As soon as she went sloppy, she gave them something to cheer about and they wouldn't shut up.

Extraordinarily ungracious in the ceremony, too. Brief speech, no mention of her opponent, and barely held the trophy. I'm am unimpressed by this lack of sportsmanship.

I lost my computer connection after after the 1st set

Take a Bow Vicky Mboko congratulations on her 1st set WTA1000 title coming back from being a set down against Osaka winning 26 64 61

Vicky will now be ranked at No 25, she was No 333 at the start of the year

I hope Vicky dosent play Cinncy as I feel she needs a rest, also rest that wrist before the USO

I can't watch because it's behind their paywall, but that's not cool. :nono:

Especially since, when she was young, and won the USO v. Serena, amidst controversy, Serena was kind to her. And it was tough. She could have been kinder to the young woman, in her big moment.
Sportsmanship is a part of our game., sad to see Osaka didnt recognize Vicky in her speech

Indeed it is. And no matter how cruel, the runner-up is asked to make a speech during the trophy presentation.

Here is an article with a 36-second clip, which contains the whole of her speech. It also mentions that she was basically phoning it in in the end, and the tennis world is not pleased with her.
