Impressed with Coco ( finally) down a break in her match against Mirra and she turned it around winning 75 61, I liked the fact Coco was soo good off the ground
Svitolina far too good for Uchijimi 62 61, yet to drop a set in this tournament
After receiving a bagel from Keys in the first set, Iga fought back to win in 3, 06 63 62

Last QF match between Sabalenka v Kostyuk The Drama Queen, both screeching loudly time to 'Mute"
Saba saved 2 SPs in the 2nd TB 6all
Saba won the 1st set 76(4)
After saving 3 SP in the 2nd set TB Sabalenka defeats Kostyuk 76(4) 76(7)
Terrible conditions for both players, that handled it well, considering.

It doesn't really matter what tournament is on the week after the US Open, it's just not going to get a good turnout. Quite frankly, it should be an off week on the schedule.

That was one of the 'best matches' Gauff has played all year, her first victory on clay over Iga, 61 61, Coco was strong in all departments and if she can keep this up she can be one of the favorites for Roland Garros, I usually dont say this so early and at Madrid of all tournaments lol!
The defending champion was lost on her best surface, her foot work was weak for starters, foot work on clay is one of the most important factors on clay! and many of us predicted she would struggle on clay this year, okay we still have Rome before RG, she has struggled on clay so far this season, and I would not be surprised if Wim Fissette is sent packing after Roland Garros.
BTW if Gauff can win Madrid she will surpass Iga as No 2 in the rankings

2nd SF underway Saba v Svitolina , much better conditions than the QFs, little wind and Saba has no trouble with her ball toss or serve at present
Saba leading 4-1
Saba 1st set 63
Sabalenka d Svitolina 63 75 she will face Gauff in the final, it is Saba's 3rd consecutive final in Madrid
Svitilona had a good tournament in Madrid, didnt drop a set until the SF, Saba too good off the ground today, though Svilolina didnt go down without a fight
The final will be played on Saturday

Wow. Iga got beat down on her fave surface. She even received a code violation warning for language. She is completely at sea this season. Maybe losing her top 5 spot will help her to relax and not put so much pressure on herself.

By the way, Coco did what Maddy couldn't do. Stayed poised amid the noise and didn't lose her momentum when Iga took her potty break.

What do you expect, Iga now resorts to either losing her temper, the ball boy incident or bad language, when she is losing, strategic bathroom user, she has lost the respect of many people, journalists and me included.

Reports coming from the Polish press that Swiatek may skip the grass season and take a long break between RG and the US Open
I will post any more further news if these reports are confirmed
Her team have come out and said if the results arent satisfactory after Rome and RH, she might take a longer rest and properly prepare for USO

WTA1000 Madrid,
Ladies Singles Final,
Saturday May 3rd, not before 6.30pm local time,

Sabalenka (1) vs Gauff (4)
Gauff leads their H2H 5-4 ( including 1 win on clay) and won their most recent match at the WTA Finals 2024.
Both players have lost only 1 set en route to the final.
This is Sabalenka's 3rd consecutive Madrid final and her 6th final of the season so far.
This is Gauff's first Madrid final. If Gauff wins she will move up to No 2 in the rankings.

Good luck to both players!
