About Munich:

Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is home to centuries-old buildings and numerous museums. The city is known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration and cavernous beer halls. Cristian Garin just keeps on winning. Most improved player of the year? So far he's gone from #84 year-end ranking last year to #41 in the live rankings currently. Last year's ranking (up from #311 in 2017) was almost entirely due to winning three Challengers in October.

I'd like to know the story behind his breakthrough. For five years he was pretty stagnant, ranking 388, 252, 321, 211, 311, from 2013-17. Then he started just winning in late 2018 and has been playing very well since.

Next up he plays Sascha Zverev. I wouldn't be surprised to see an upset.

What I know is that he retired from one junior major due to injury -- maybe that plagued him from the very beginning. Expectations were indeed quite high with him from the start. When Jarry (fellow Chilean) was making noise I remember people here saying "wait till Garin arrives".

^^ I saw some of his match today v. Schwartzman...Garin really out-classed him. Of course it makes sense that he looks much more mature in his face and body than he did when we were first looking at him, but maybe he's really just grown up physically, too.

Interesting. I remember someone here talking about him way back in 2014 or so...and then it was 2015, 2016...and he wasn't developing and eventually was forgotten about as other NextGenners surpassed him. It seems he has arrived. The way he's playing I suspect he'll reach the top 20 in the next month or two.

JLB was following Garin from the get go. Has has finally broken through. But do not expect him to do as well outside of clay. He is quintessentially a specialist.

JLLB has been a great scout of young talent, but I think it was actually Rafa that highlighted him, when he played Viña del Mar in 2013. Garin may be a clay-courter, or maybe more. Rather soon to tell.

Yeah, it's a puzzle. I'm wondering if it's a step back and then two forward... or maybe Sascha will just subconsciously blame Ivan and send him a silver bullet.

Khachanov had 5-2 or 6-2 in the TB and Kohly skunked him, winning 5 points in a row to take the first set. There's still a lot of ball-basher in KK.

What about this, to K's point about Zverev regressing under Lendl, or at least not be doing better under Ivan: everyone thinks that Lendl has the magic touch because of what he helped Murray do. But he was the right man for a specific problem with Murray: all the skills to win a Major, but needing belief and to rein in the head a bit for the step up. You could say that Alex is the opposite...lots of ambition and belief, but weaker on some of the basics and the tactics. Perhaps this isn't in Lendl's wheelhouse to help with.

Sounds like a gossip, but heard the other day that Zverev broke up with his girlfriend. This might be behind his poor recent form although they always claim some injury problems when they have some personal issues. I can see him playing much better after he digs himself out of the hole. Same happened to Coric a year or so ago.

I think there's a good chance that because Zverev didn't grow up watching Lendl, Ivan has less of an impact on him. At the end of the day, it's on Sascha. He's a grown assed man. If the likes of Tsitsipas, FAA and Shapo start moving past him, he'll have no one else to blame but himself. You can lead a horse to water but it's his choice to drink

Murray was a pussy, he needed a male......meanwhile Zrerev is no pussy, he is actually a bit robotic like Lendl used to be, and adding variety (which Murray had a lot of) obviously isn’t his forte.
