What amazing will. So sad he lost it in the end. It was good composure from Cilic. I think De Minaur is going to be my favorite player when Federer retires, Aussie or not.

I'm putting De Minaur on my list. I like a fighter. This kid has speed and nerve.

Rafa has played Bailashville only once (it was at RG'17) and the scoreline was 6-0, 6-1, 6-0. So, there is not much hope for tomorrow. Let us hope that Anderson/Thiem will man up in QF.
I am not saying that Basilashvili will best Nadal today, but that type of beatdown is not going to happen again. Niko has a new coach and since he has proved quite a bit. Thus his first title at Hamburg this summer.

Will you say this again after you watched both matches? I guess - not.
Mastoor, I saw both matches. In terms of entertainment value, Fed-Kyr was far more entertaining and marquee than Djo-Gas. That's not a dig at Djokovic. I was at Ashe yesterday night. Djokovic gave a clinic. He made Gasquet look like a league player. His game is uncanny. What's obvious to the average spectator is his reach and flexibility. It takes a trained eye to see what he is so good at. He puts the bull wherever he wants to, he returns what most players would miss but it all looks like practice court shorts.

Djokovic is of course popular, but not anywhere near Federer in terms. And Kyrgios' is already well known to semi-active fans as, I am quoting a family I was chatting with on the grounds, 'biggest younger raw talent and mental case in tennis'. Of course, the shot making, touch, variety in the Fed-Kyr is easy to appreciate.

Nads swallowing another donut whole. He will get a walk in the park vs Thiem too, hopefully that will be the end of him.

That says a lot about the playing conditions. Thiem is normally absolutely worthless off clay.

Yup, absolutely disgusting tournament director just like Wimbledon. The main issue seems to be the balls are ultra heavy this year. I mean, Anderson made the final last year and Thiem just plain sucks off clay and the fact that he's doing well here is because this practically IS clay. Slow and high bouncing. Not the way the US Open is supposed to be at all. A complete joke.

A couple of things working in Thiem's favor though here. The surface is great for him. He has time to wind up the shots. Rafa does not necessarily take time away from you. He dealt with Kevin's serves great today. And Rafa has been very breakable so far. And Thiem has a big serve.
I know, they have to all line up but I like where Thiem's game is at right now.

Well say what you want about the surface but when a guy who swings for the fences hits 42 winners and 13 UE, he's going to win that match and probably win going away.

When in doubt these tournaments just seem to go to heavier balls quite often. I don't think the USO has tinkered with the surface but obviously conditions are much slower than even 5 years ago. I recently saw a highlight of a rally between Agassi and Martin about 20 years ago in the USO final. Talk about a different sport.

Yup, it's mostly about the balls. Counting their money and playing with their balls. Miserable gits. Needs some management changes to sort this mess out :chainsaw:

I remember Shoelace mocking the suggestion last year that these directors may mess with the surface and/or weight of the balls/ depending on who their favorite player is. But I think it's a realistic possibility. It's not like these directors aren't tennis fans and therefore it's highly unlikely they don't have a favorite player...

I hope people can speak more publicly and critically about the slowing down of playing conditions, especially coaches and players. The problem is that those people who should speak out usually make observations on the slower conditions, but they do not go further to say that there is hardly any variety across playing surfaces.
