Surprised to see Tiafoe get blown out the first two sets by the pipsqueak. That De Minaur is a good fighter but he has no weapons at all.
For me, movement and footwork is as important as weapons. De Minaur is a better mover than Tiafoe.

Weaponry or not, Alex de Minaur for me is one of the Next Gen to watch.
He is coming up through the rankings like gangbusters .

A good attitude and mentality can take you far right now and that's the main thing from De Minaur and Young Greek hero. They need more developed weapons and experience and then we could see real upside.

I agree, they are very young and could work on many aspects of their game. The good sign for me is that they get used to play the guys on the main tour and does not take too much time to learn how to beat them, thus their rapid rise. They have a positive win-loss ratio from the get go, and many of the young ones usually are beaten up initially.

Does someone know what the Umpire Chair (Lahyani) said to Kyrgios and right after he played much better?

Monfils retired with wrist injury against Nishi.
Nishi is not the most fragile after all!

Apparently he coaxed him to give his best and reminded him that "this is not you. I've seen you play many times". Something to that effect. This is aboveboard and perfectly OK in my opinion. Yes, it was not his role to do that. But his alternative would have had to formally warn/penalize him for 'tanking' if he didn't start something. Now that is a serious warning that too in a grand-slam tournament. So he informally checked if he is OK, realized the kid was pouting. He had a few kind words of encouragement. The crowd got a real tennis match.

People are acting as if he forcibly injected PED into the kid. This nutcase is the biggest waste of talent since Nalbandian, Safin and Tsonga.

It was not his business to say words if encouragement. He made a boo-boo.

Bizarre. I'll have to watch this one back.

Haven’t watched the match yet but from all indications it seems that Kyrgios had put on the shark fins...

So the moral of the story is: start tanking so badly that the chair gives you a personal pep talk.

Totally disagree. It's fine to give a warning for tanking but there is no excuse to do what he did. This is a professional match, played for serious money, ranking points, etc. These aren't 6 year old kids playing little league baseball. Having the chair ump of all people come down and basically fire a player up is just wrong on so many levels.

Silly questions from Rinaldi. He is trying to outdo Jim Courier.
