I was going to post this earlier, or on a Zverev fan thread, though I'm not sure we have one yet: Read this from the NYTimes the other day, and tell me if he wasn't surrounded by distraction. I never thought he'd make the final, given everything, though I didn't think you'd see the pressure wear this quick. Still, he's ahead of what they project for him and I think he'll settle in.

Indeed. Do read the NYT article that I linked to just above. Plus, at 6'6", he's still filling out and not at his strongest yet. I really do think that he and his team are trying to keep down the chatter and distraction, and I think he's very focused, but a lot has happened to him in the last few months. He'll find his way, I am completely confident.

I put it down to him taking out an injured Federer in a dominating fashion in Montreal. Some people really thought that meant he was ready to win a Slam, but they should have known better when he lost early in Cincy and said he was "fatigued." He's 20. Just because he won 2 tourneys in 2 weeks - he should not have been THAT fatigued. He's not the first 19/20 y.o. to pull off a 500-1000/Super 9 event back to back. He clearly still has some fitness work to do. That's part of the problem with being so tall though. The tall guys tire much quicker than the shorter guys.

I was watching a bit of the Zverev match. He looked gassed after a lot of points. At that age, he should not even know the meaning of being gassed. I am wondering about his fitness and conditioning.

I said well done for that one set, that's all...He is already exceeded my expectations here by first qualifying and then winning the first round match. He will only get better.
As for Zverev, no judging, just an observation.

I'm not saying this is anything other than a disappointment, I'm only saying that we can also see what he's done this year, how young he is, how he's still filling into a man's body, so we could give him a bit of a break. We all hoped he'd do better. But what, then? Are we writing him off? Are we slagging him for it? Or shall we just say it's been a big year for a promising young player, with a lot of distractions he's not used to...and maybe, as his body will catch up with his mental maturity, he'll also learn to handle the circus that is newly surrounding him. I do take him for a fast-learner.

Fatigue was a factor last year as well with him. His results in the first half of the season are stronger for the second years in a row.

Shapo is a great prospect, that is all. We are excited in Canada to have him. I am already very proud of him, no matter what the result will be tonight.
