Come up with the "best" reason for Andy Murray playing in Doha in 2014 rather than defending his Brisbane title. :) The reason can be serious, comical, and should have a bit of history behind it, but doesn't have to be completely factual. We have a lot of creative thinking people on this board... let's see what you've got!

For example:

His services are being bought by the highest bidder.

He would rather play a Playstation tournament between matches with Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer than travel to Australia and get sunburned with Federer.

------

After all the posts are pretty much in (let's say a week), maybe we can narrow down to a top 5 reason list and then create a poll for the best one. (or maybe one for serious and one for comedy).

Have fun!! :)

Fed is playing Brisbane and maybe he doesn't want Fed to get another win over him as he may well do if Andy played there instead of Doha, simply because he won't be match tough after surgery and a good few months off. No point giving the top players confidence boosts in advance of slams when you yourself will not be match tough. Let's be honest, Fed's best chance of advancement in the AO is if Andy happens to not play anywhere near potential thanks to his layoff from surgery. He surely doesn't want Fed's confidence sky high with an early win in Brisbane. Of course we haven't seen the draw yet so that's all just hypothetical re the AO.

Good start Front!

Doha's looking quite rich in top 10 players this year.

They'll have:

#1 Nadal,
#3 Ferrer,
#4 Murray,
#7 Berdych,
#9 Gasquet,
#21 Kohlschreiber,
#24 Gulbis,
#30 Ferdasco,
#31 Monfils,
#33 Dodig, etc.

Brisbane:

#6 Federer
#17 Nishikori
#19 Simon
#20 Anderson
#23 Dimitrov
#27 Melzer
#28 Lopez
#29 Tursunov
#34 Chardy
#35 Benneteau, etc. including #61 Hewitt

I'm wondering if Murray is thinking to take a similar path to Nadal's road last year (except hard instead of dirt)... skip the Australian Open as it is too soon for him to be playing at the level needed to do well in a slam, and then play in some additional minor tournaments like Rotterdam, Marseilles, etc, before ramping up. If he is thinking this, then maybe he is thinking he doesn't want to go all the way to Australia for a prep?

Yes, and I'll bet they've paid dearly for it. I'll go with dough was the reason. Or Kim wants to shop. ;)

Yes it is, all they need is Djokovic taking a wild card and it would resemble a masters. But I imagine Djokovic will go straight from Mubadala to the Australian Open.

Seems that #5 Del Potro, #21 Janowicz, #51 Tomic are playing in Sydney as of now.

#8 Wawrinka maybe in Chennai after Mubadala? Don't know about #10 Tsonga.

Doha from dec 30th/31st is an easy airbus A380 flight away from London, seeing as he prob be nipping back to the capital for Christmas.

after going to Miami much earlier this year I think a spell at his home in London near his mum and his chums before going to Doha would be more palatable than flying to aussie for a 250tourney and then having a week break until the aust open.

Mr. McGuire: I just want to say one word to you. Just one word.

Andy "Benjamin" Murray: Yes, sir.

Mr. McGuire: Are you listening?

Andy "Benjamin" Murray: Yes, I am.

Mr. McGuire: Doha.

Andy "Benjamin" Murray: Exactly how do you mean?

He will take a plane earlier than that, as he goes to Abu Dhabi, first. From there, Doha is the neighborhood.

I agree with Moxie, this was the reason:

Andy was dopey after his op. Lendl asked him what he wants to do, does he want his deck of cards to play snap.

Andy slurs: "do...wuh?" Then falls back asleep.

Lendl shrugs, goes off and fills out some forms...

ha ha, nice vid, herios.

Here's a classic in a similar vein.

Lyrics:

Money, get away
Get a good job with more pay and you're okay
Money, it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream
Think I'll buy me a football team

Money, get back
I'm all right Jack keep your hands off of my stack
Money, it's a hit
Don't give me that do goody good bullshit
I'm in the high-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet

Money, it's a crime
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a raise it's no surprise
That they're giving none away
Away, away, way
Away, away, away
