The 2014 Wimbledon Championships are far more significant than just being this years second slam.

It is about the BIG FOUR and the the contenders establishing their turf.

A LOT at stake.

I believe events here will have a major impact on the rest the year and beyond.

1-Nadal:
He CLEARLY saw a chance to add to his slam tally, beat Sampras, and possibly catch Fed.
Grass is clearly one of his "least best" surface, and he was hoping to erase the last couple of years worth of desultory results.

2-Djokovic:
Clearly frustrated by losing at the French to Nadal, last years Open to Nadal, and at Wimbledon to Murray, wants to make a stand. It is nice to win masters events, but he wants this. He also wants the #1 ranking back

3-Federer:
He is clearly annoyed at the press for writing him off, and he desperately wants to prove his relevance. He does not see himself as a lion in winter, but right in the thick of it.

4-Murray:
No doubt he wants to repeat. He will not be able to stand the commentary if he does not. He wants to prove last year was not a one off. He has had very lackluster results since that victory. To get back in the mix is clearly what he wants.

_______________________________________

Contenders who desperately want to prove they are worth the hype:

Raonic
Grigor D.
Nishikori

And clearly...Stan wants to prove that he can go deep into a slam..after winning one.

Don't forget Kyrgios

With all due respect to the God of Krygios, he was/is hardly a "contender." This result was certainly unexpected. He would be filed under the category of Talented Rookie. I will be very happy to see him develop and build on this result.

My point is you're saying there's a lot for Raonic to prove here too but he may lose to this guy in a few hours :) Hopefully!

Raonic may indeed lose in a few hours, and he DOES have a lot to prove. He has been building a career slowly over the past three years and has been talked up as a future slam winner.

Nick is a flash in the pan until further notice. He has no resume. I've been watching him since last year, and only over the past 2 months has won matches with any frequency.

Could he be the Boris Becker of 2014? Let's see!

could be. . but Boris was only 17 when he won Wimbledon but quickly went on to prove he was no fluke.

21 is like 17 was in 1985. The game is far too physical for a 17 year old to win a slam today.

Yeh, what ever happened to that Becker guy after his 1985 win?

Explains why he was on crutches when I saw him at the WTF a few years ago, all that broom cupboard action. I actually wasn't looking when he walked past but he bumped into my then girlfriend and said nothing. No apology. Bit of a rude chap actually!

Things are shaking up here big time. Murray, as I predicted, was not gonna defend this title in a MILLION YEARS.

And Grigor, who I have been discussing as a future to 5 player, with many doubting the wisdom of that prediction is into the semis.

Federer proved there is no shift in the balanced of power in Switzerland. When Stan beats him in 3 out of 5, then I will concede.

I was turned off by the disrespectful interview with Grigor after the match with the BBC. They asked him multiple times if he felt sorry for Murray and if he was subdued in his celebration out of "respect". They shifted the focus on his OUTSTANDING performance and tried to paint a picture that he got luck Murray caved.

No you DOLTS. He was subdued because he did not want the English crowd to boo him after dethroning the two slam wonder. It is called being smart.
