Before you accuse me of bragging, you should know it wasn't the reason I opened this. I'm opening it because pretty much everyone wrongly thinks it is Federer, but he isn't.

Federer probably leads in total number of indoor titles because he won many lower levels ones like Basel, Stockholm, Vienna. Rotterdam and Bangkok.

However, Federer has only 6 titles on levels 1000 and 1500 to Novak's 9. Novak won last 7 indoor tournaments he played starting from WTF 2012 (all 7 were either Bercy or WTF titles). Will he go to 8 and 9 this year?

As for traditional indoor tennis historically, I would say McEnroe, but with Connors and Lendl not far behind. JMac has the highest match winning pct. He had 65 straight match wins on carpet, topped only by Lendl's 66.

Aside from the obvious under a roof meaning, indoor tennis traditionally meant quick courts and carpet encouraging good racquet skills more than wall to wall movement and physical stamina.

However in recent times it no longer has the same meaning.

Indoor conditions in the last few years have become almost obscenely slow to try to produce more rally tennis and uniformity. ATP purposely made it so and they don't bother denying it and even tried to make indoor courts as identical as possible using the same court surface. For example, Paris-Bercy last used carpet in 2007, but for safety reasons, they changed to Gerflor resin in 2008. But many said the surface was too slow. So they gradually increased the speed by 2010 it became the last true fast court on tour. It was rated over 45 on the ITF's CourtPaceRating scale where Category Fast has a rating of 45 and over. Guys like Michael Llodra, Soderling, thrived that year. They slowed it down some in 2011, and then by 2012 or 2013, they had replaced it with the O2 surface. Last year, it was rated below 30 (Category - Slow, like clay). This year it might be in the mid 30's - medium - quicker to some, but still slow for indoors.

"KIng of Indoors" is pretty meaningless now. Maybe it should be "King of Medium Slow".

Respectfully,
masterclass

I think it is 8 for Federer. 6 YEC's and he won Madrid in 2006 when it was an indoor Fall event and Paris in 2011. It is pretty neck and neck and I'd be surprised if Nole doesn't break Fed's record of 6 YEC's as he already has 5 of his own.

McEnroe holds the unchallengeable record on carpet, so he's got fast indoors. Between Roger and Novak, I'd think Roger has the faster indoors, Novak med-slow. Both are happy not to be challenged by the elements...were happy that Rafa wasn't better indoors. LOL.

^ Both Nads and Nole are happy they slowed down indoors by a ton, though even that hasn't been enough to make Rafa the slightest bit relevant during indoors season

It's frustrating that they don't have carpet anymore. Roger would have been a monster on that. Novak is the main man indoors these days, or was. Let's see how he bounces back next year

bragging is fine, but how about refrain from twisting facts and reduces players actual stats to make your guy look better? that's not winning any argument you know.

What was reduced? You tell us what you think is incorrect, I'm sure I've counted everything right and I used their profiles on ATP website.

http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/players/roger-federer/f324/titles-and-finals

Federer
2011
Barclays ATP World Tour Finals (Indoor/Hard)
ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Paris (Indoor/Hard)
2010
Barclays ATP World Tour Finals (Indoor/Hard)
2007
Tennis Masters Cup (Indoor/Hard)
2006
Tennis Masters Cup (Indoor/Hard)
ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Madrid (Indoor/Hard)

So, it is 4 indoor titles on 1,500 level and 2 titles on 1,000 levels for Federer.

I think without even counting it must be that Mac and perhaps some other players from that time won maybe even more big titles than Nole simply because they played more indoors, but I think I wanted to show how tennis fans sometimes have perception that differs from reality. Another example is in Rafa's biography when he talks how people wrongly think Toni influenced his playing with left hand. He says it had nothing to do with Toni, it just came naturally to him

That's a good point about perception. Sometimes people hear things and simply go with it. But in Rafa's biography he also dispelled that idea of him wearing his shoes two sizes too small. His shoes were never two sizes too small, but were specially made to accommodate the congenital bone defect in his foot. Yet, the commentators kept repeating a story that was false.

I would have considered Federer the king of indoor hard courts too, but that's because I saw him win so many.
