Who or what got you into WTA?

I'm a fairly recent convert to tennis. What first got me interested was, while channel-hopping in 2011, stumbling across Eurosport and Caroline Wozniacki playing in Indian Wells.

The blondeness caught my eye and I watched the match, then decided to see how she would do the next day, and they day after, right through to the final, where she beat Marion Bartoli.

I haven't looked back since!

What's your story?

Wimbledon was a big thing in our household when I was an ankle-biter, mainly because of my mother. Vaguest memories were of Evonne Goolagong but I was too small to really follow the sport then. I first got into it watching Chris Evert and the rivalry with Nav... but I was still a kid and it was centred largely around Wimbledon to the exclusion of anything else.

The one I followed from beginning to end was Stefanie Maria Graf. Was a huge fan. Nobody has ever quite replaced her in my "allegiances" and I mainly follow ATP... but on the current circuit my favourite player is Cibulkova, but I like a few others including Woz, Ana....

My first memories of tennis were from French Open at the end of 70s and beginning of 80s. I don't know before that, but around that time we got to see more tennis on TV due to success that Mima Jausovec had in this particular tournament. She is from Slovenia, but at that time it was all one country SFRJ so we all watched her. Then it was Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova's rivalry, so I continued to watch tennis and I just fell in love with it. Then it was Monika, doing the impossible and becoming such a force only to suffer such a hardship by no fault of hers. To me that is still one of the saddest stories in sport. I am not that emotionally involved in WTA these days but I do like a lot of players and watch from time to time.

When I was a kid, there was not much tennis on TV except for the French Open and my first memories of WTA tennis are Steffi Graff, Sanchez and Seles. I liked Graff's style, with her sliced backhand and the way she was turning around to hit a forehand. Then the double handed forehand / backhanded of Seles and all the argues with our coach when we were trying to do the same during the training sessions (adding the same scream after each shot) :)
Then I followed a bit Mary Pierce and Venus Williams but I am definitely more interested in ATP now.

Loved Evert - met at a hotel lobby in Boston at around age 7 before even knowing what tennis was (parents recognized her - they didn't know tennis at all but knew who she was) - she was so nice I loved her on the spot and started to watch tennis a few years later - then started to like Connors and that mcEnroe vs Borg rivalry - But Evert was the one who hooked me into it -

It's funny how Gabrine Muguruza said that majority of people who watch wta do so to watch their legs and not their tennis. When I watched her in the stadium I did exactly that, I looked at her body more than her tennis. I would never think I'd do anything like that, but I couldn't help, it's so impressive. Perhaps I have extremely strong affinity for Venezuelan women.

I don't watch wta often, but I did watch much more in past when Serbian girls had more success, first Monika Seles and later JJ and Ana. Back then I watched their and their opponents tennis, not their bodies.

Good on ya, Mastoor. I think it's fine to admit if sometimes it's about the legs, if it's not always about that. Same as we women fans admit that sometimes it's because some of the men are a bit hunky. If we come for the tennis, and appreciate the players for it, I don't think it's a problem if we sometimes stay for the loveliness. It's a shame if Muguruza still feels like that's all it's about. (And I like her game, btw.)

I was first taken by Evert v. Navratilova, in the WTA, though I do remember the Battle of the Sexes between BJ King and Bobby Riggs. As I'm disinclined to those who win everything, I wasn't initially taken with Graf. But after the Seles attack, and the subsequent revelations about how controlling Graf's father was, I was much more generous towards Steffi, and impressed by her accomplishments. (And of course, empathetic towards what Seles suffered.)

When the Williams sisters started to come up I found them compelling, and I continue to. That's my WTA trajectory.

I like Cibulkova too. I like a lot of them, actually, but it always amazes me that Dominika walks amongst giants (to her) and still backs herself to win a lot of the matches. That's heart.

When I first started watching tennis I watched the ATP mostly. I'd catch a WTA match every now and then, but I really started watching when the Williams Sisters hit the scene. From the beginning I zeroed in on Serena and told my tennis buddies that Serena was going to be the one. They laughed at me because Venus was winning everything, but I could see that Serena put more work and nuances into her game from the beginning.

Back then I liked Lindsay Davenport, (loved the way she hit the ball; reminds me of Berdych), Mary Pierce, and the scrappy little Aranxta. Enjoyed watching Martina Hingis too, but I only loved Serena with Lindsay being another favorite, as in I would root for.
