Maybe this has been done here before but there are a lot of new guys on here (myself included) so I was wondering who everyone's all-time favorite player is. I really don't have a true favorite right now but I always seem to root for the underdogs. So it would be nice to see guys like Berdych, Tsonga or Ferrer be able to grab a Grand Slam title someday. That's always fun to see. Like Wawrinka last year. But my all-time favorite player is this guy.

Mats Wilander
8-time Grand Slam Champion: Australian Open ('83, '84, '88), French Open ('82, '85, '88), Wimbledon (Doubles '86), U.S. Open ('88)
1988 Year-End No. 1
33 Tour Titles
3 Davis Cups
Loved his demeanor and style of play. He met Ivan Lendl in five Grand Slam finals and won three. He is still the youngest Australian Open champion.

I don't have one. There have been three players I've followed with similar fury and intensity: first was Borg, the second was Pete, and now Rafa. I wouldn't pick out of the three of them. Marginally, I'd place Bjorn down a tiny ratchet, but I think that's only got to do with the passage of time. I recall the near heart attacks and fits of dry-mouthed heeby jeebies I'd have when Borg faced any old American lefty. It's the same as I felt whenever Pete saddled up his horse, or whenever Rafa takes on anybody at all.

Just below these, I loved Mats and really liked Lendl, and occasionally Becker, but mainly with caveats attached...

I was a Connors fan, who detested Borg publicly even though I privately loved to watch him play. I am more emotive in tennis, so the Swede's icy coolness seemed unnatural--lacking some sort of human quality--such that I used to think it was a put on. Yet, I admire and respect him more now and realize he was a helluva nice guy, whereas Jimmy ... well, his on court demeanor was his off the court in large part!

McEnroe I came to like next, even though he vied for my favor with Jimbo. I could not NOT praise the genius that he was on court--but I never liked him as a player. Now, I like him as a person better than before, and I rooted for him intensely against Ivan the Terrible from Czechoslovakia. I did not like Lendl at all.

In the Eighties and early Nineties, I largely fell out of tennis and did not watch much of it. I did enjoy Edberg's game and his manner, but he was not an all time favorite. I did NOT like Andre and still don't--not his game or his glam back then. Sampras reminded me of Borg in terms of his other worldness--I never warmed to Pistol Pete, but that service!!!! Never have I seen anything like it.

The guy that got me back to playing tennis, and who reminded me of Johnny Mac in terms of sheer tennis brilliance, was Federer. Ironically enough, the first match I ever saw of his was the 2005 Lipton final whilst on vacation with my new girlfriend (now wife) up in Atlanta, Georgia. I flipped on the television set to see this new hot shot I had heard folks talk about on ESPN and he was down two sets to love to some teenaged boy wonder from Spain!! Needless to say, I was singing Roger's praises when he mounted a comeback to win in five sets, but that Nadal kid impressed me too. I have been more a Federer fan than a Nadal fan over the years--not because of personality or on court demeanor (I used to live in Spain and follow and otherwise root for Spaniards against all, sometimes even my own paisanos (if they are nasty and undeserving) and often have with Rafa)--but because of the beautiful brutality of his game. I had never seen anyone play and hit winners from all over the court like Federer from 2005-2008--and with such ease and grace. The guy was unbelievable--with the most dangerous FH from anywhere I had ever seen. Yet, I love Nadal, more so for how he is and how he has lived his life, than his actual tennis. He has the fight and heart of a Connors, which earns points with me. Yet, I don't find his style of play appealing--kind of the way I did not like Lendl's bashing and outlasting folks (I know they both hit a ton of winners, but they often win by attrition).

So, those are my guys. Sorry to make it so long, but I start thinking about these things and just let it out.

Borg to this very day is still my idol and my favorite player.I still miss him.I was mortified when at age 25 he gave the game away.Borg brought tennis to the working class man,he also brought Sex,Rock and Roll into tennis.

One of my all time favorite matches was the 1980 Wimbledon final between Borg and Mac,that t/break was the 't/break to end all t/breaks',then Borg went onto win the fifth set and the match.

I could never understand why Borg could not win the US Open,I still blame the lights by the way...:) I dreaded every time he played there and felt sick in my stomach, kind of already knowing the outcome.

I admired his Ice Man attitude on court,I would have loved to interviewed him, asking what went through his mind at different stages in matches.

There has never been another player that has come close in my admiration that I have had for Borg,he always lives in my memory.

I can relate so much to this. When I started watching tennis, Borg and Connors ruled the tennis world with McEnroe coming up on them fast. Borg just had this other-worldliness about him. I loved watching those three play. I was also stunned when Borg walked away. My young 17-year-old mind could not comprehend such a thing. And then Wilander came up and he was the first of my age to win a GS and after seeing him beat Lendl, Vilas and others to win the '82 French Open I was his fan.
I think one of the reasons I like tennis so much is that it has always given us a great cast to follow. Borg-Connors-McEnroe to Lendl-Becker-Wilander-Edberg, to Sampras-Agassi, and now Federer-Nadal-Djokovic; it's never boring!

JMac to Edberg to Sampras to Federer.

Muster sneaked in there too, because I had a soft spot for him after his accident.

All single handed backhand players. Maybe coincidence but I don't think so. All attack oriented players. Even Muster, for a clay courter.

Borg was my first favourite and was pretty disappointed when he retired early. Although I never really classed Mac as a favourite but he was box office to watch - I often rooted against him in the early 80s but always dialled in when the opportunity presented itself.

Stefan Edberg and Steffi Graf are my all time faves - I followed Edberg from Junior Wimbledon through to his retirement.

Like shawnbm, I fell out of love with tennis to a degree in the 90s, particularly after Edberg retired but started following Marat Safin at the end of the decade and rooted for him until he retired.

Safin was such hit and miss though and when he was out of a tourney I generally rooted for Federer as I was mesmorized by his game. He's the best all round player in the men's game I've ever seen, and when Safin retired I nailed my allegiances firmly to the Fed mast.

My alltime greatest tennis story was at 2006 ATP 1000 Miami Series. Donald Young Jr played a match vs Carlos Berlocq(I think it was his first ATP tour match ). Berlocq embarassed DY jr 6-0 6-0. James Blake was sitting in the stands close to some of us and really felt bad for the poor young American, Donald. Afterwards of the match, James just shook his head and gave the group of us sitting close in attendance the head nod, " I got this one Bro". The next round James totally dismantled Berlocq 6-0 6-0. All time best pay back , IMO. James isnt my all time favorite player but he garners my all time RESPECT.:clap

McEnroe(Johnny), Sampras, Safin and Rafa. McEnroe had the best hands and touch ever. Mac precision serve and volley placement would nick an opponent all over the court until they would be bleeding everywhere. The one quality I like about Mac was that he didnt Suffer fools gladly. Sampras was a pure warrior who had the two greatest weapons in tennis Ever(his 1st and 2nd serves timing and placement was incredible), Safin was the ulimate tennis display of pure brute force and march to the beat of his own drum. Rafa, the ulimate warrior.. what else can i say is that if I had to pick one player to play a match for my well being it would be the Clay Warrior regardless of the surface.

It was the McEnroe low slicing approach shots that really created the havoc for Bjorn's two handed backhand return. Bjorn was routinely out of position which created a very easy volley sitter put away for McEnroe's attack game. IMO

Past: McEnroe and Edberg, with a salute to Rafter. And if we're including WTA, my all time fav for both men and women is Seles :)
Present: Federer and Azarenka on the womens side. I also root for both Wawrinka and Nishikori if Roger's not on the other side of the net
