There's a bit of an unfortunate trend after Novak loses: his fans put on their jackets and leave.

I understand, the forum goes into Fedal hyperdrive, with ridiculous displays of fandom and gloating and GOATing etc, but why do the Djoker fans stay away? And why do they then return when he wins?

I have no beef if someone is busy, or doesn't want to post. That's their prerogative and a wise one it is, too. I often absent myself and it's good. But never because Nadal has lost.

How can the forum become less Fedal orientated if the Third Wheel fanbase won't give us their view?

Apologies to Iona and Nehmeth and Riotbeard and fans of other players who stayed!

It's a good question. I looked up a few of our more prominent Djoker fans, and they haven't logged on since 7-8 Sept. (The USO final was 8 Sept.) It's not great for even-handed conversation. It's not easy to stick around in the thinner times, though I hardly think these are lean times for Novak. He's still #1, for heaven's sake.

There haven't really been that many around even before Wimbledon, I'm pretty sure many are on a different board. Is some of their absence due to the fact Novak has done so poorly again since AO? Probably, but even Mastoor wasn't a main stay on this board after AO from what I remember.

Do I count? I'm a Novak fan

I have you in the Rafa camp.

But technically speaking, you're right. We all love great tennis and so therefore we're fans of what Novak can do and does, if not of the man himself when he does them against Rafa...

Yes, we all love great tennis, but the come-and-go appearances of the Djokovic fans makes it seem more like they're just that: Djokovic fans, but not tennis fans.

Every time Djokovic loses to Federer or Nadal, Mastoor takes an obligatory one month leave. Denisovich said he's taking a break till the US Open. Herios was on vacation, posted a bit, but is probably not in the mood to discuss tennis for the moment (For the record, I'm not saying that as an "in your face" thing. It's normal for fans not to be enamored with the sport after a high profile loss). Billy seemed to get offended in the thread about Novak's dad and his comments about Fedal and has been MIA since. There are a couple that I'm forgetting.

Anyway, I always chuckle at complaints that Nadal or Federer fans are more numerous on these boards... That's because they're more numerous in real life. This is merely a reflection of that.

I know Billie often posts on a different board these days, Denisovich and Riotbeard were here even after the last loss. That really just leaves Mastoor and Herios. There aren't many Djokovic fans on board to begin with. Not really many of any fan base aside from Nadal when you think about it.

Good eye Darth. Yes, most of them left a while ago, before Novak's "poor" season. ;)

For others, college football has moved to the forefront of our focus.

Sadly, we haven't had that many Djokovic regulars. We've talked about how to get more in. And I know that Billie is on another board, which I believe we know she moderates, so one is usually enough in that case. I was pleased she came around at least for a visit. And I actually thought we had more Fed fans amongst the regulars, Darth, or until the recent influx.

This is true. Britbox, Moxie, and I have discussed this, but it's proving to be a difficult goal. Plus, it's one thing even to get them here, and another to get them to stay after Djokovic loses (especially a big match).

As Kieran pointed out, the Federer, Nadal, and, yes, Iona stick around no matter the outcome of their guy, but so many of the Djokovic fans seemingly vanish after match point. During the brief periods they are here, we're accused of being a Fedal message board, therefore they feel like they don't fit in. But they don't make a place for themselves. It will be -- scratch that: it can only be -- a Fedal message board if a clear majority of the Djokovic fans only come around when things are going well.

I feel the same. Several come to mind (in alphabetical order): Asmodeus, Britbox, Darth, El Dude, Fedfan, Fiero425, Front, ftan, haelfix, jesuslookslikeborg, johnsteinbeck, lindseywagners, masterclass, Murat, Mog. I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but that's just "A" through "M".

The majority of posters on a general tennis forum will be Nadal/Federer fans. This forum isn't any different. They are the biggest names in the sport. That is just a fact and whether they're winning or losing they will generate the most posts. I think non-Fedal fans understand that or at least they should.

I'll admit I never take an Andy loss well. I don't read back match threads. I tend just to post a congratulatory message to his opponent and his fans. Then I take a break for a day or two. I think the reason why Mastoor finds it difficult to return is that he can be so overbearing before a match and so dismissive of Novak's opponent that he feels a bit embarrassed if Novak doesn't win.

I've no problem with it being a predominately Fedal forum but it is nice to see fans of other players. What I will say is that there has been an enormous amount of gloating recently and I can see why it might put people off. Also, some of the negative and dismissive posts with regard to Roger and Novak and their achievements have been beyond ridiculous.

I'm happy that my favourite Djokovic poster is still around. A few more wouldn't go amiss. I think most posters on here are respectful of Murray. I don't mind them not being fans.

I'm pretty sure that Didi is basically Fed, and Isabelle...Oh, wait, sorry. :snigger

Point being, some of the Djokovic camp of our gypsy family joined up as soon as we started this forum, but have bailed out frequently. That's too bad. At least nehmeth and Iona stick around to hold up the other two legs of the table. In the worst of times for Rafa v Djokovic, or this tough year for Roger, or all the times when Andy was in the wilderness, there have been supporters willing to stick around and discuss/support. Given that Novak is still #1, I'm really surprised that his fans aren't making more of a showing. They complain that he doesn't get enough respect, and then they disrespect him by abdicating from the conversation. I really don't understand. Times aren't even that thin for Nole. Where's the bravado? There was so much of it a couple of years ago. Or at the very least, the foul-weather friends.

I think it's normal that some fanbases take breaks from time to time and currently just make use of it. There is no offseason like in European football or US sports but there are a lot of breaks for the top players along with their fanbases, for example post-AO, post-W, post-USO and of course the season ending break which lasts around 6-7 weeks and which I personally enjoy the most during Christmas etc. Now is the perfect time to make use of it. And keep in mind the post-USO slump is usually one of the ugliest and most depressing ones as it marks the end of the Grand Slam season or even the season in general for people who are not keen on Indoor tennis.

There is also a life outside of boards and tennis. Sometimes a break from tennis can really do a world of good and result into new passion and enthusiasm for the sport. There is always the serious danger of overstimulation and overkill when you get emotionally too exhausted after investing a lot of energy. There are some serious issues the Nole camp needs to address and at the moment most Nole fans are probably a bit deflated. I think we've got to respect that. They will come back, it's just the normal cycle.

NO, Nole's fans are being gracious and letting Rafa fans have one last hurrah!

How is that for an answer?
:D

But doesn't this always happen? everyone's fan base gets energized everytime one wins a slam.
I remember us talking about Andy a few months back...

Appreciating the game is the key but of course you cannot tell a person how to do that. I have a rough day when Roger loses a match (there have been a few recently) but I love the game so much that I hate the idea of missing good tennis or even a conversation about good tennis. I have a huge amount of respect for Nole, Rafa and actually every guy who is playing because I have an idea about how much work goes into what they are doing.
