What now for Roger?

After an amazing performance in the semifinal, it looked like Roger had found the level he needed to win Wimbledon. He really looked like the Roger of old, a Roger that we haven't seen consistently since at least 2009, and only in smaller and smaller doses since. But a combination of the fact that he simply couldn't maintain that level and that Novak is a better player than Murray led to his loss. Very disappointing for Roger and his fans (but congrats to Novak and his!).

I can't help but wonder if this will be remembered as the last real chance Roger had at winning a major. I know, he's still #2 in the world but the window keeps narrowing. I honestly don't think he can beat Novak in a Slam final; anyone else, maybe. But how many more chances will he get? He's made it to five finals in the last six years, so we're talking less than one final per year. He's going to be 34 at the next Slam. I think also there just isn't the weakness in the tour that allowed someone like Pete Sampras to win a last Slam in 2002 or Andre in 2003. In 2002-03 there was no equivalent to prime Novak Djokovic blocking the way, or ever-hungry Andy Murray. Hewitt wasn't on that level and Roger wouldn't be there for another year or so.

So here's what I fear: The fire will be out of Roger after this one. I don't like to speculate in this way, but can't help but feel it to be a strong possibility. I don't expect him to retire, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was his last Slam final and that while he'll play through this year and next in order to get one more shot at the Olympics, today's loss may be too hard to fully recover from. I suppose there is always hope that Novak is upset earlier on, but right now Roger must feel that he simply doesn't have what it takes to beat him on the big stage.

Or maybe I am just projecting my own disappointment and loss of heart? :cry :snicker

yes, you are. we had that same conversation after last year's final. and even more so after last year's USO.

anyway, i feel he'll probably keep going. as much as the losses hurt, there are enough wins. and to be able to play the #1 on this level, years after everyone has already written him off at least twice? gotta be nice.

^Totally projecting your own disappointment :nono The guy is still competing getting to slam finals. He has chances to come. If because of this it's his last final, then what can be said about the rest of the tour? This is the number 2 ranked player in the world remember? This is a guy who gets knocked down and keeps coming back. I think you seriously misunderstand what it takes to be a champion. Novak played a great match, nothing more to be said. Congratulations to Novak and his fans, he's a class act and deserved the W.

^ Good post Federberg.

All the Fed fans who want to trash him and throw him under a bus, I've got a simpler solution- stop watching him.

I'd still prefer watching the well managed decline and the odd displays of brilliance like I saw against Murray on Friday. Didn't expect him to beat Djokovic, so wasn't too disappointed.

Doesn't change much for Roger going forward. He still has the great moments, can still beat just about anyone. I think he's long accepted he's not the best player anymore. He just has to give himself chances. Will he win a big one again? This is the first time I'd bet against it but he's proven everyone wrong many times before. Just remember what most of us were thinking after 2013?

Exactly! Yes I want Roger to win more titles. But most important I want Roger to play! Any fan who doesn't get that isn't really a fan, but projecting their own desire on to him. Yes he lost the final, but I'll be taking my memories of that destruction of Murray with me after this tournament. That's what real fans should be doing

All good stuff, makes me feel a bit better - except for Britbox's silly implication that I want to "throw him under the bus." Come now, buddy, that is just silly.

OK, fair enough, just not sure who is throwing him under the bus.

#18 is still very possible. Things can happen. Djokovic could lose or get hurt. There are no shortage of possibilities.

Knew it. This is why I didn't even watch the match. Throw him under a bus? No, of course not, he is punished enough by this alone. Thanks, Fed, now go stick that Wilson wand up your ass.

Seriously, this kind of response from you is common. The bloke is an octogenarian in tennis terms and he played a great match, had a great tournament, but you come out with this sh1te? :cover

I am positive Nole will win Cincy this year. Canada, however, is too slow for Roger these days. I see Murray claiming that one.
