Vera Zvonereva has confirmed her entry into the Odlum Brown Vancouver Open 2014 which starts at the end of the month. As many of you know, I have followed Vera's career from the time I saw her play in Toronto when she was 16 years old. The former number two, dropped all the way down to 566th, and just gained 298 places with her three wins at Wimbledon.
I have missed seeing her play on two occasions, when she had to pull out with injuries which have plagued her so much the last two years, from breathing problems to that chronic shoulder injury that kept her out most of last year.
The $200,000 ITF event, $100,000 for men and women, has had some fine players grace the courts of the Hollyburn Country Club over the years. I am hoping Vera can get into the semi-finals as I can only be there on day one and two and the final two days of the event, which carries over till the first weekend of August. If that happens I will do my level best to sit down with Vera and have a chat with her. It has been on my bucket list for a long time. Just a ferry ride over from the Island to West Vancouver, about two and half hours travel time. I was at the Open last year. Wish me luck guys!!

Make sure Vera doesnt have a racket somewhere when you ask her the difficult questions ;)
I liked her feisty temper but sometimes it was too painful to watch how she was destructing herself.

I will tread carefully. Talked to the tournament director today, and there is a decent chance I will be able to interview, Drama Z on July 27th at the players gala party, which I have been invited too. Her agent, will be contacted. so will see if it pans out! Yes, Si Si, she has had many moments of self destruction over the years, but in recent times she has been able to curb her temperament a bit better.

I recently saw Miss Drama Z play World Team tennis, she looks pretty good(but we all know that isnt always against the top WTA players.) Her movement was excellent, shots were agressively consistent. I would say that once she regains the strength in a shoulder, she may be back with or without the drama.:snigger

BTW.. Marion B plays on the same team(Austin Aces), sad to see that she isnt staying physically fit.

Well everyone, I made it over to Vancouver on Sunday to the first weekend of the Vancouver Open tennis tournament. Get all setup and went to watch a match at Centre Court. Talked to a security guard, that I intended to chat with Vera Zvonereva at the player/media party. He looked at me and said, "oh dear, Vera is not here she withdrew, was injured playing WTT on Wednesday as well as the other top seed Sharon Fichman!" I was stunned, did not get a press release to that effect and my whole day was kind of shot. I chatted with the tournament organizer, and said, no point me coming to the party, as I can't interview Vera now, and it would make for an extremely long day.
Saw about 5 matches, one with an unranked Canadian named Rosie Johanson, who won her match 6-1, 6-0 and thought I would get an interview with her in a couple of days.
So the headline for my next column will read, WTT takes a "slice" out of the Vancouver Open but things are still "Rosie"! Rosie did lose her next match to the #1 qualifier, but I had a wonderful chat with the 15 year, she is training in Montreal at the Tennis Centre and was thrilled I took the time to chat with her! So disappointment turned into something worthwhile. Yes, I am really upset at not getting that golden chance to interview Vera, but as Julien Benneteau said to me when he was one point from winning his first ever ATP singles title, in Kuala Lumpur, earlier this year, "That is tennis!" Back to Vancouver this weekend, and then I take a little break from tennis coverage and concentrate on my advertising sales for the Citizen. Just thought I would update you on what went down this weekend. C'est la vie!!

Funny, I just noticed a few more bits on Vera. As mentioned she caught my eye years ago when she was around 17, playing in Toronto, and she became the main reason I follow tennis as much as I do today, not as much as some of you(fashionista you are amazing at the amount of time you spend watching the sport!!). But, Vera (Bepa) had this compelling desire to win so badly, she truly made a lasting impression on me. I have now missed seeing her play at least 4 times since that first time,due to injury and I hope she does come back in 2015, because I will not rest easy until I sit down with her and get that interview. When I want something badly enough I do not give up. Two years ago, it took me 2 1/2 days of waiting to finally get to sit beside Maria Kirilenko and chat with her. Hopefully, in 2015 I can knock off two more "Russian Birds" off my list Elena Vesnina and Vera. :laydownlaughing

* Bump *

With Vera in the spotlight because of her match against Serena tonight, it's worth reading rubydo's posts again.
