RE: US Open - Day 1, Monday August 31 - Order of Play

We're trying something new for the US Open. At the top of the ATP & WTA forums, in the "Forum Announcements" section, each day's order-of-play will be posted. This way, you will always know where to find the latest information, since it will always be at the top, whereas regular threads get moved up and down, depending on use.

Since it's an announcement, it can't be used like a regular thread, so we're still going to have a thread for each day in the "Important Threads" section, which can be used for discussion.

Interesting that only 2/5 matches on Ashe are men's, but they are big names: Djokovic and Nadal.

Also note last year's runner-up and winner are playing back-to-back on Armstrong.

I think Groth versus Dolgopolov could be exciting, with the contrast of styles.

RE: US Open - Day 1 - Discussion

Hmmm, difficult to know who will be the the winner of this USO. Last year Roger had a very easy draw and we know what happened, this year he and Rafa have difficult draw and meanwhile Novak has easier but I wouldn't bet for him either
I was very surprised how much energy and speed Roger showed in Cincy, even more than when he was younger, but I don't think he is going to repeat it and less playing at 5 sets. He has Leo Mayer first, not too easy opponent and later if he would pass to the next round then probably Isner, Gasquet, Muzz or Wawrinka, etc
But we'll see how every player will play, the first week could be more interesting than usually it is

Meanwhile to each his own theme lol

Roger should have had an abundance of energy at Cincy as he hadn't played any other warm-up until that point. I would be alarmed if he didn't show up the freshest of the top players.

This is probably one of the first "Day 1's" in memory; even if you go with just the one Stadium Court! It's very impressive for both the men and ladies' draws! ;-)

Anyone picking Coric over Nadal? :nono

Benoit (Paire) is playing well, but Nishikori will do the same to him that Djoker did. Maybe one set will be close.

Fognini v. Johnson might be interesting.

And after his first ATP final, I'm wondering how Herbert will do against Agut.

I think we're getting 2 headline worthy upsets today. Rafa, Kei, Venus, Jelena and Ana better be on heightened alert.

I am. Borna beat Rafa the only time they have played (and it was on hard court), and I'm liking Coric's game a lot more than Rafa's right now.

You mean another "Black Monday" like the FO back in '90? Becker and Edberg were upset on day one! :cover I didn't knock it, made for a better Wimbledon final in 5; not like either was going to win on dirt that year! :p :ras: :nono

We will rue the day that ESPN got sole coverage of the Open. They have at least 4 channels and none of them are showing tennis matches (on the first day of this country's national slam). Their coverage starts at noon. Instead, we're forced to watch coverage of Brady's woes, RG3, other NFL crap, First Take (can't stand Skip Bayless), Mike & Mike and a bunch of sports reporters running their mouths about stuff they're hardly an expert in. :cover

I've said this from the day they took over USA's night coverage. USA always came on at 7 PM with coverage, and while I struggled with Tracy Austin's sometime insipid commentary, overall USA did a spectacular job covering night matches.

Since taking over the night matches, you get evenings where ESPN does not pick up coverage at all on occasion, relegating you to watching on your laptop, or only coming on at 9, after having missed 2 hours of play, or having to channel hop to find coverage.

no, ESPN had clearly stated that TV coverage will be on starting at 1 p.m. only during the early rounds.

I would anyday take ESPN over the NBC and CBS which used to show semifinal matches with a tape delay (i.e., if you are lucky, otherwise you don't even get that).

However, play began at 11 A.M.

That's my point. They wanted sole coverage of the event and now they have it. But starting the TV window at 1pm when play starts at 11am is silly. They could have given that window of coverage to the TC.
