Since we were talking about Del Potro on the Soderling thread, I thought it worth creating a different one for Delpo.  There is no clear indication of when he's coming back to the tour, from anything I can glean.  The Argentine press seems to feature a LOT more gossip about his love life than information about how his training is going.  It seems the AO is out.  He talks, as he has long done, now, about not rushing it, only to be reinjured.  Maybe February?

I didn't hear anything solid either, just few posts from his Facebook account.  He was training.  I guess if somebody finds any news, they can post it here.  I hope he can come back soon.

Does anyone know if his wrist injuries directly relate to his forehand and backhand technique?

Just curious.

Not that I ever read the reasons for his wrist surgeries, though I am not sure they would tell us that.

Anyway there was a short article on ATP website a few days ago but it does not really say much:

I've never read anything as to that, and I suspect if anyone could figure that out they'd win the sports-doctor pot of gold.  I don't know that there's any 1:1 reason for it.  He does hit the ball awfully hard, but he has a 2-hander.  Must be congenitally weak wrists.  And I'll offer an opinion here:  I think he got some bad advice from his doctors, a couple of times, when they delayed surgery, (the first time,) or kept him playing through pain (the second time.)  Either way, it cost him months of playing time.  But what do I know?  He seems confident in his doctors.

I think this dude is done. Not in terms of playing again, but in terms of relevance. A shame.

Fighting through the rankings has cost him over a year in the past before he because somewhat relevant again. It's a huge effort mentally. I think it will be more due to the injuries though.

Coming back to any decent level will take a huge mental effort, not to mention the physical.  Meanwhile, the game is passing him by.  It will take an Agassi-like resurrection.  It might be doable, but I fear that Broken is right.

It would be great to see Del Potro back because the game sorely needs some personalities with dynamic playing styles right now. All you really have is Kyrgios aside from the big names. The tour needs some Argentine flavor again to spice things up. Not only are most players boring, but you also have players like Raonic really ruining things. Raonic could lead someone new to tennis into thinking that it was a game for men in leotards.

Dokic was gone for years - Baker was gone for years - Capriati was gone for years - Delpo is a great player and he can still be a force - but his body may not be as strong as his mind and heart - Everybody loves Delpo and we all hope to see him back soon - the latest photos I saw on twitter were of his left arm in the sling but he's back on the court now training again -

del potro keeps getting tough draws, freaking isner on fresh quickish grass. :negative:

according to the rank list q and a, a 32man atp500 draw has zero points for a 1st rd loss, wonder if he might like a wildcard next week ??, pretty sure he'd get one if he wants one.

He needs some luck in draws, quickly, and some deeper runs in couple of these tournaments. Otherwise, it is going to be so hard for him to make a comeback and improve his ranking.

Isner was a bad draw. And I think he will run out of "protected ranking" at some point. (Next fall sometime?) He could use a little luck. He needs matches, and to go deeper in draws. He's coming up onto his part of the year, after grass. He needs some good wins, and soon.
