Same goes for Flavia. Has she been the #1 seed at any tournament this year?

If she has, I have no memory of it. I'm surprised she's playing this tournament to be honest. Does a Slam champion automatically qualify for the WTA Finals? If so, then why does she is playing?

That rule is in ATP. I am not sure whether it is there in WTA too.

That's why I was asking. I know it's there for there for the WTF, but I can't remember ever hearing that rule for the WTA Finals.

WTA rules are crazy as expected. Basically, they say the top 7 in the rankings get in and WTA can do whatever they want with the eighth spot. They can even give it someone who has not even won a GS if they feel so. It is just a wildcard spot. So, Flavia does not get automatic berth in view of GS win. But, she is already in top 8 and I think she will get in.

Verbatim from rules book.

"The Tournament shall consist of a singles draw of eight (8) players (including one (1) Wild Card, if applicable) in a round robin format.
The top seven (7) players using their 16 best Tour Year singles results, counting for the WTA rankings, shall qualify for the Tournament. The qualification method will count all events from the beginning of the Tour Year and exclude the 2014 WTA Finals and the 2014 International Tournament of Champions.
At its sole discretion and taking into account extraordinary circumstances, the WTA may select the 8th player for participation in the singles draw. If the WTA does not exercise its option to select the 8th player, the 8th spot in the draw will be awarded to the player who is in the 8th position using the method described above."

Penetta loses to No. 414th ranked Lyudmyla Kichenok. Oh my. :cover

Maybe Penetta should have just retired after the USO after all.

Even if Pennetta finishes below #8, I am sure WTA will invoke the "extraordinary circumstances" class and give Flavia a wild card. Flavia has already said that if given a chance she would like to play at the WTF.
