Wow that one in the Dog match was ridiculous and at such a huge moment. As far as I'm concerned when something like that happens they better have a substitute linesman available.

The guy should have been pulled out of the chair immediately, and pantsed* in front of the crowd.

That linesperson probably cost Lajovic 24 000 $ and quite some points in the rankings...

Can't they just get rid of linesmen altogether? Just let hawkeye do everything, with a bleep to notify an error.

Probably better to call the Serbian mafia to visit the lines person's home.

^ Sounds like the best solution. Two broken legs should do the job.

Bloody hell! That's actually hilarious. It's like parks tennis when the other guy is calling the lines and you see a few whoppers!

Ridiculous alright. He had Dolgo way off balance and likely would've just had to whack the ball into the open court to get to match point. The linesperson should be fired or relegated to challenger events only.

TBH, I think the challenger players deserve better, they need the money (and points to get to the money) more in any event than the likes of Nadal and Djokovic.

Exactly. Having people call these when there's technology which would eliminate the human error factor is unjustifiable.

Yeah, that was an unfair statement which I retract. Just get hawkeye to watch every single ball.

I don't think the current technology they have it can call in real time. It can only be
used for double checking later on.

Forget linesmen, they get poorly paid and probably cannot afford to get an eye exam
every year.

You would think that the Umpire will not be blind as they get paid higher. As was
evident from the Umpire's non-call when Novak crosses the net, that also does not
seem to be the case.

I really do not see how the umpire can miss this one. He sits right on top of
the net and in the middle.:puzzled

But what would happen if we have an equipment malfunction? We see it in the challenge system all the time (either it's unavailable or something like that). In the case above, it would mean that a match cannot be played.

Yeah, let's not pass every human job in existence over to machines. The lines people are part of the sport. So what if they occasionally malfunction? It's part of the game. Very rarely anything huge or match-changing comes from a bad call. And using Hawkeye as a back up is a good idea. But the human element is part of the communal aspect of sports...

I'm thinking more long-term, since obviously the technology isn't available to everyone yet. In time, though, it will become more efficient, more accurate, and less expensive -- as is the case with new and developing software/hardware.

Malfunctions will inevitably become less frequent, too -- if not quite rare -- as the technology improves. Personal computers certainly weren't perfect when first introduced, but we didn't use that as an excuse to keep relying solely on typewriters and calculators.

And even if there is a malfunction, play could be suspended until the problem is corrected, just as play is currently suspended for multiple reasons.

Things change, Kundun. :)
