at the minute he is wandering around trying to defend/gather in enough rank points to be near top32 for the aussie open, his sf points at basel 2014 drop off tomorrow, not sure he will do it..good season though. around 40 rank and still 18yrs old (b. nov 1996).

I just read Borna's interview for B92, a Serbian media outlet, after his 1st round match in Paris, perhaps @JesuslookslikeBorg and other fans might be interested in it.

They see him as a future top 5 tennis player and Grand Slam champion, but Borna Coric is aware that it's a long journey, the journey which needs a lot of dedication, hard work and persistency.

"I analyze my game a lot, I am just that kind of guy. It's like doing that and I see room for improvement in virtually every stroke - especially forehand, backhand maybe a little less, but still I see I can do better. Then in changing the direction of the ball, the volley can still be improved a lot, I would like to improve my second serve. There are so many things, I do not focus solely on one, I'm working on everything - I am aware that it will not come overnight, there will be ups and downs, but I'm working on the flaws and the good things that can be even better, " Coric started his interview for B92 and added:

"Sometimes I look at the video, when something extremely interested happens or bothers me, but not very often. I think a lot about tennis, I know by heart the entire match - in which points I played what, how everything happened, particularly important points ... Then I analyze it with the coach, but also with myself, to see how I can play smarter next time " .

Borna is 19 years old, is currently 47th in the world and says he likes to make only short-term plans, so that the top 10 is not in his thoughts.

"I do not like to trouble myself with these things and to make such predictions, because it is usually the opposite. I focus on the next goal that I set up, and it's Top 30 - when we succeed, then we will define next goals. I think that Top 10 is still far away - for that to happen it is necessary to make remarkable results at major tournaments, but that is not easy and I think that I'll need some more time. Although who knows, "said Coric, who at the Grand Slam tournaments has not gone beyond the third round.

For his playing style Borna is often compared to Novak Djokovic, who has helped him since the young Croatian tennis player became a professional.

"Often we train together, we are great friends and he always gives good advice - says what he thinks, just recently in Madrid I asked him about a few things that I was interested in, he told me quite openly. He's really helped me since I came on tour, when I was 16-17 years old, "said Coric and added:

"Maybe this is a little extra pressure, but I normally do not react badly to pressure - the comparison is more like a challenge to work even more and to try to not be just words. Generally, I try to enjoy traveling, tournaments and work on myself and try to live life in a normal way. "

One of the main objections in Borna's game is that he is too passive, which of course he knows.

"The truth is that I am too defensive, especially in the moments when I do not have confidence when I do not feel the ball perfectly. Then I stand too far behind the baseline. I can see it, not only I, but all who know a little bit of tennis and it's not a big secret. I work every day on how to stand closer to the line to take the initiative in points more often and to play more from inside the court. We talked a moment ago about Novak, it's amazing how Novak opens the angles, the ball is 'heavy' and I have to strive to achieve that. "

In the first round of Roland Garros Coric beat fellow teenager Taylor Fritz, and now he plays Bernard Tomic.

"I am pleased with all aspects of the match in the first round: movement, return, service ... I've been preparing for seven to eight days and it shows. Bernard is a class player, around the Top 20. Clay is not his strongest surface, but he can play on it. He is a little older, but not so much (four years), we are almost the same generation. It will be interesting and a good match, "concluded Coric for B92.

Good win for Borna Coric over Benoit Paire in Cinci. I'm still not convinced that he's going to be an elite player, but he's getting some results.

thought I had a thread on borna.

anyhoo, coric had knee injury which he ignored last autumn and it got worse , ended up missing rest of season. now struggling to get going again, he is playing Rotterdam atp500 this week.

That's tough Dude. I'm guessing you don't mean it as a compliment.

I don't. He's just stagnated for about two years now. He reached his career high, #33, over a year and a half ago, has mainly ranked in the 40s-60s, has yet to win a title or go beyond the third round at a Slam. Unless he develops a bit more offensive fire power, I don't see him being much more than the type of guy that fills out the last ten slots in Slam seeding (that is, #20-30ish).

Coric is a good example as to why entering the top 100 as a very young player (he was just shy of his 18th birthday) doesn't always equate with success.

That said, Coric is young enough that he can improve, but I think the ship has sailed on him becoming an elite player. At this point an optimistic outlook would see him becoming something like David Goffin.

^On the face of it I guess I agree with the above, but I always have a sense that we treat the fact that a player "only" reaches top 20 in the world occasionally as a complete failure, which ultimately is extremely unfair. Take out the big five, we have, including youngsters and old timers, what, 30 to 40 players regularly in our conversation. We cannot expect them all to get to #1. They are all fighting for the same space, after all, and it is a very tough fight. El Dude used Goffin as an example, and while I fully understand what he meant, sometimes it seems that we forget actually how bloody good a guy as Goffin is. He is one of the top 15 players in the world, and apart from the big four (in this case I do not include Wawrinka given his inconsistency), you would not be surprised to see him beating anyone else. That´s a lot to ask for an athlete.

In other words, the fact that we are used to see the Federer, Nadal and Djokovic -- which, at least in my opinion, will be still seen as GOATs in 50, 100 years time - playing so often, made us so exigent that everything short of absolute greatness is seen as failure.

Well said, mrzz, I totally agree with you and have had similar thoughts - that we tennis fans tend to be a bit too harsh and critical, as if you aren't #1 and winning Grand Slams, you suck. That is absurd, as you illustrate with Goffin.

Understand that I was replying to britbox's comment on my comparison to Tomic. On one hand, there's nothing wrong with being Bernard Tomic - he is an excellent tennis player, makes a living at it, etc. But I'm talking more about the expectations; a few years ago Tomic was considered a future elite player, but has settled in more in the 20-30 range and there's no reason to think he'll ever be better than that. I think Coric is similar. I don't say this in a judgemental way, more as a way to be realistic.

I agree with most of the above, but the Tomic comparison was interesting. I understand your comparison to possible career plateau but see them quite different.

I think Borna is more limited than Tomic but far more ambitious. I've followed him quite a bit and like his attitude and determination to improve his game. I think injuries have had a part to play in his stagnation. Tomic's attitude isn't on the same page.
