Nadal's one loss has to be the one. Up until that moment , it was Chang beating Lendl for me. Chang beating Edberg was extremely upsetting for me as a big Edberg fan, but I do not believe in itself it was a big upset, after the Lendl win.

1982: Unseeded Wilander beating No.2 seed Lendl, No. 5 Gerulaitis, No. 4 Clerc and No 2 Vilas to come out of nowhere to take his first French Open. Connors was the No. 1 seed at that tournament but got knocked out by No. 13 Higueras in the quarters.

Wilander and Nadal are the only two to win the French in their first try.

Roger is Nole's headache to deal with periodically! Every player has an annoyance no matter how old and out of their prime! In my day old man Laver owned Arthur Ashe even when reigning #1! For Roger, it's Rafa who has embarrassed him more times than he'll ever want to acknowledge! For Nadal, it's been Nole with more winning streaks over him than any other player! Rafa's last vestiges of dominance and respect have been pierced and he must win FO unless he wants to wallow in the basement outside the top 10! :p  :dodgy:

I was more thinking about the situation at the time, Nole was on an insane run leading up to that match and everybody was expecting another Nole vs Rafa final. Nah, I think Federer beating Nole from time to time is not the worst thing that can happen, as long as it is not in a major.:D

Actually I think it is healthy for all players to lose from time to time, there are so many tournaments that they play and you really can't win them all. It's just a matter of when you lose.

I take your point, Billie, and it's fair to make. It'll never be "top 10" because it was a SF, and because Federer was the opponent, not some journeyman, but it ended Nole's long winning streak. It also preempted a final that will never be played. Believe me, even myself and a few other Rafa fans I know also wonder the "what ifs" of that one. I guess it gets an "honorable mention." :)

for me two matches are regarded as the biggest upset:

2009 Soderling d. Nadl
2011 Federer d. Djokovic

1982..was mental how did a 17yr old beat lendl and vilas. wilander said vilas fell abart mentally when he started thinking he might not win..

that 82 final,,vilas won 1st set 1-6 and had a set point for a 2 sets to love lead before losing it to mats on tb..4hr plus final too..and it was hot.

like a lot of folk 1also chang 1989, 17yr old beats prime lendl and prime Edberg..chang was 2 sets and a break down to lendl on clay and won. surreal.#

and in 1987 a floundering McEnroe lost to the not so famous horatio de la pena (?), in 1st rd..not really remembered but a big shock at the time, a depressed mac claimed he was palying so poorly he pulled out of wimbledon87.
