Over the years there have always been ATP players who seemed to be perpetual "opponents", and when they played seeds the matches were glorified practice sessions.
Some names that come to mind are Michael Berrer, Florent Serra, Potito Starace, Maximo Gonzalez, Alberto Martin, Michael Russell, Vince Spadea, Paul Henri Matthieu, and until 2 years ago, Seppi. Seppi's record against the top 50 was horrendous until he woke up and really worked hard
I nominate Benjamin Becker as the ultimate ATP punching bag. I think Becker has been pummeled countless times by the top 10 and has rarely strung 2 match wins in a row together in 500 events an up.
There are and have been many others.
