Augean Stables: 45th US President Trump Has to Deal With Obama's Legacy
Sputnik
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Obama, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 over his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” seems to have fallen short of the world’s expectations as a peacemaker. His successor will have to deal with the global geopolitical situation fraught with many tensions. Some of the major issues a new US leader will face include the raging war in Syria and the damaged relationship with Russia that deteriorated significantly during Obama's rule.

The next US president will also have to deal with domestic problems, including the often criticized Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as the Obamacare and nationwide socioeconomic problems.

Increased Threat of Int'l Terrorism

The wars worldwide in which Washington has been interfering and which have not ceased under Obama's administration, such as the ones in Iraq and Afghanistan, are yet another problem for the new US leader to deal with. Simply withdrawing US troops is unlikely to help in this case, especially in Iraq, where, Washington-led operations are thought to have brought to life the Daesh terrorist organization. Daesh has since grown to become a global threat and has been prohibited in hundreds of countries, including the United States and Russia.

The fight against Daesh and other terrorist organizations will be one of the main challenges for the next US president. Unfortunately, the United States has not yet found a systemic approach to this problem, limiting its response to aerial raids carried out against Daesh positions in Iraq and Syria. However, such attacks have caused casualties among hundreds of civilians, according to human rights watchdogs. People who have suffered from western interference in their countries' conflicts tend to become easy prey to terrorist recruiters.

Moreover, in the past year, US residents repeatedly experienced the terror of extremist attacks on their own soil. The San Bernardino terror attack, claimed by Daesh, and the Orlando nightclub shooting, have shown that nobody can feel safe from terrorists even in the United States.

Need to Resolve War in Syria

The new White House boss will also have to address the issue of the Syrian conflict. The situation in Syria, where a civil war has been raging since 2011, has been exacerbated by several factors.

Experts say that Syria has become a stage of indirect or diplomatic confrontation between Russia and the United States over the past year. The cooperation between the two states in the Middle East country has so far been limited to a flight safety memorandum, which is not what such important actors as Russia and the United States could be proud of in Syria. While many say that a closer cooperation between the Russian and US military on Syria would benefit all parties, the US side has so far declined all invitations from Moscow to broaden the cooperation to help resolve the crisis in Syria.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have opposite views on this issue. Trump has said that the United States should stop trying to get rid of Syrian President Bashar Assad and should instead start looking for a diplomatic solution jointly with Russia. At the same time, Clinton has taken a hard line on the issue, supporting Washington's current goals and strategies.

Restoring Relations With Russia

One of the biggest challenges for the next US president will be to revive dialogue with Russia, which has been most recently derailed by the difference of opinion on the conflict in Syria.

So far, there are few points of contact between Moscow and Washington. The Kremlin says it is ready for dialogue with any US president provided it is based on mutual respect. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about a week ago stressed the importance of cooperation and negotiations in the modern world.

“… No one in this world can do anything on its own anymore”, Lavrov said, commenting on Obama’s words about the United States and its partners setting the rules for other countries.

Obama’s successor is likely to face difficulties in restoring the relationship with Russia. Even if the next US president opts to end confrontation with Russia and lift sanctions, he or she will have to overcome the resistance of the US political establishment, which may not be amenable to the idea of a policy overhaul.

“We will most likely see a high degree of inertia in US policy on Russia, which implies continuing a hostile course,” Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said commenting on whether or not the relationship between Russia and the United States would change drastically under the new president.

Ryabkov added that the relations with Russia would not be the most immediate concern for the new US leader.

Uniting the Divided Nation

The key priority of the next US president on the domestic stage will be the consolidation of the nation. This presidential campaign has shown that the country is sharply divided along political, religious, racial and many other lines.

The next US president will have to deal with many socioeconomic issues, each of them of utmost importance for the US citizens. For example, he or she will have to launch dialogue between the police and ethnic minorities, primarily African Americans. Contradictions between them are rapidly growing to an alarming scale, and the authorities will have to work very hard to normalize the situation.

One of the most publicized cases of the last five years was the killing of the African-American teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida in July 2013 by a neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, which led to the establishment of the powerful political movement Black Lives Matter. When an African American man Michael Brown was shot by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri in 2014, it provoked

a wave of protests
locally and nationwide, just like the fatal shooting of Keith Scott, another unarmed African-American, in North Carolina did this September.

To boost economic development, the next US president will need to fight unemployment and create new jobs in order to ease the mounting social tensions in some parts of the country.

According to the US Department of Labor statistics, the unemployment rate has been steadily declining nationwide since a sharp surge in 2009-2011, but some states, such as New Mexico, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, West Virginia and 18 others fare worse than the October national average of 4.9 percent.

Obamacare will be one of the biggest points of contention. The 2010 Affordable Care Act has been repeatedly challenged by the Republicans as, while ensuring larger access to medical care for the lower-income citizens, it hiked the costs and narrowed options for many middle-class Americans.

US shuts down embassy in Kabul after Bagram base blast
The US Embassy in Afghanistan was closed on Sunday after militant attacks on the largest US military base in the country and the German Consulate.

In a statement released late Saturday, the embassy said it will be closed for routine services on Sunday “as a temporary precautionary measure,” AP reported Sunday.

The suicide bomb attack on the Bagram Airfield on Saturday killed two US soldiers and two contractors, also injuring 17 others, one Polish serviceman among them, according to US Defense Secretary Ash Carter.

“For those who carried out this attack, my message is simple. We will not be deterred in our mission to protect our homeland and help Afghanistan secure its own future,” Carter said Saturday.

The attack was carried out by a man wearing a suicide vest early Saturday morning as people were gathering for a post-Veterans Day fun run. The base was put on lockdown following the blast.

Bagram Airfield, the largest US military base in Afghanistan, is located in the Parwan Province. The base is occasionally used by the US Armed Forces and is mainly occupied by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). It features several layers of security, including retinal scans. An investigation will be conducted to determine, among other things, how someone with a suicide vest could get in.

The attack on the German Consulate in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif two days earlier resulted in six people being killed, with more than 100 injured.

Breaking: One Million Koreans in Historic Protest to Oust U.S. 'Puppet' President Park Geun-hye
By Zoom in Korea
Park-Geun-hye-400x266.jpg

As of 8:30 pm (Seoul time) on Saturday, November 12, 2016-

South Korean media report 1 million gathered at Gwanghwamun Plaza to demand Park Geun-hye’s resignation. This is the largest protest South Korea has seen since the democratic uprising of June 1987. People from across the country, including conservative strongholds Busan and Daegu have traveled to Seoul to join the protest. Youth in school uniforms and mothers with children are among the protest.

Protesters on the way to the Blue House are blocked by a barricade of police buses near Gyeongbok Palace. The police have also blocked off entrances to subway stations between the police barricade and the presidential residence. Protesters are intent on reaching the Blue House but so far remain peaceful.

Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon refused to supply water from the city’s fire hydrants to the police, which had threatened to use water cannons to block protesters. Referring to the death of farmer Baek Nam-gi, hit by a high-pressure water cannon at a mass demonstration in November 2015, Mayor Park said in a radio interview, “No more.” He added, “Water from fire hydrants is intended for putting out fires, not peaceful protests.”

A reporter outside the Blue House says protesters can be heard from the Blue House, which has been in a state of emergency since Saturday morning but has not issued an official response to the calls for the president’s resignation.

The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions has vowed a general strike if Park Geun-hye refuses to resign. 150,000 workers are among the protesters at Gwanghwamun Plaza- 35,000 public sector and transport workers, 20,000 government employees, 15,000 metal workers, 15,000 service workers, 10,000 teachers, 5000 health and medical workers.

The Saenuri Party has called for an emergency meeting tomorrow amidst growing calls inside the party for Park Geun-hye to leave the party and its leadership to resign.
