Apparently Tennis Canada paid members of the Genie's Army to come over and
cheer for Eugene Bouchard. This is unprecedented and in bad taste. There is lot
of hue and cry over this.

Initially, there was also rumor that WTA will pay for Genie's Army's expenses
involved in coming over to Singapore to cheer for Genie assuming she make the
cut. Then WTA got out of it after seeing the backlash.

Here are some links.

Hope my darling Laura recovers fast from wrist injury. I am forming "Laura's Legions".
Interested folks are welcome to sign up. Free trip to next Wimbledon will be offered as
a bonus (by LTA or WTA and not by me). Experience in T-shirt design would help.
Experience in cheer leading preferred. High pitch voice a must.

Even from a Canadian perspective, I find this gluttony of over exposure on Eugenie hard to take. I just did a story on a 15 year girl from Abbotsford BC, she competed in the Vancouver Open. Caught my eye as she had a serve around 96 mph, pretty impressive. She spends most of the year training at the Tennis Centre in Montreal. I wonder if Tennis Canada helps to defray the cost for her parents? Let's ease the marketing hysteria for Eugenie and concentrate on the game at hand, continuing to improve her game and not have the WTA make her the next "Wonder Women of Tennis"

RE: Tennis Canada Paying for Genie's Army

I don't even mind Genie's popularity, marketability or the fans and public going crazy after
her. What is ridiculous is that Genie's Army has gained its own popularity. Apparently, the
public are wanting autographs from members of the Genie's Army and also wanting to take
photos with them. That is going too far.

Also, it is highly idiotic of Tennis Canada to offer financial assistance to a select bunch
of fans even if they are vocal cheer leaders of one of their girls.

The money would have been spent much better promoting tennis in the grassroots of
Canada's population so that future stars keep emerging.

Agree with you Game Set, the Genie Army scenario is inane. Tennis Canada's money as I noted should, and as you say be directed to the younger players in the country to help further enhance their chances of becoming potential future tennis stars. The young player I mentioned has been inspired by Eugenie, so yes she has made a stunning impact on tennis in Canada. Let's utilize that in the right direction.

Just when I was having seconds thoughts about Simo you added the "not by me" note.
Shame, it was a good plan ;)

Si Si, you are welcome to join Laura's Legions. They don't really have many
good youngsters in UK in tennis and so organizations such as LTA would not think
twice to fly us over there. We need 14 founding members for each letter of the
alphabet in Laura's Legions to begin with. I think it would also help if
Laura wins a few matches once in a while.

p.s. On a serious note, among all youngsters such as Sloane, Genie and Laura, I thought
Laura would outshine the others. I am still holding hope.

But Laura has stated on her Twitter page for years, she plays tennis occasionally !! So she is living up to that motto. I will join the Legions if I can fly free in business class from Vancouver to London!! I'll even take exclusive photos for you and the charge will be minimal.

I hope they do it more often, breed fresh blood into a shrinking fan-base we need more Tennis fans in general.

Why is this a bad thing?

Oh. No. It is always good to encourage more people to be tennis fans.

However, to me it appears to be unfair that some fans got special treatment and
financial support to be a fan without the same opportunity being extended to all
fans. Instead of handpicking some fans, they should run some sort of contest
and then fly over the winner or something like that.

I am not talking here about fans of all other players. There is nothing wrong if
Tennis Canada wants to support only fans of Canadian Players. After all every
country has and should have vested interests in their own players.

Are you serious? She does not want to be a full time professional player doing the
circuit. I think she wants to be a full time player.

Right now, she is down with wrist injury, had a surgery and recovering from it.
Hence, she is not playing.

Also, in younger years, there is a limitation imposed by WTA on how many
main events an young player can participate and so she could not participate
I guess.

But, I strongly think she is like every other WTA player wanting to play
a full schedule and becoming a professional player. Just prove me wrong
with links.

Laura better run the Marathon with Caro. It will do wonders for her lousy fitness :D
See what running did to Caro. It gave Caro new life in tennis and Caro never looked better than now.

I actually think running a marathon is detrimental to the body. All that stress from pounding the asphalt cannot be good. The last time I went to a running store to buy sneakers, I noticed all the workers who are runners were limping.

Paying Genie's Army is ridiculousness of the highest order. How many players on tour are struggling financially? Money should be shunted to them to help ease the burden. Bouchard is becoming a mini Pova. Most people love her or hate her. Dumb stuff like this only fuels the haters. All the bagels she has gotten recently might put her on the Kournikova path. Without her mental toughness, Bouchard is not extraordinary.

Looks like she lost her confidence in last months but she will get it back. I am not exactly her fan but I respect her as a player. Its just a temporary set back imo.
