The Tournament:

The Maharashtra Open (formerly known as the McDowell Open, Gold Flake Open, Chennai Open and the Tata Open) is a professional men's tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts in Pune, India. It is part of the ATP Tour 250 series on the ATP Tour.

The inaugural event was held in New Delhi. It was then shifted to Chennai and since 2018 it moved to Pune, where it is held in January. The tournament is owned by IMG and organized by IMG Reliance. It is the only tour level tennis event currently held in India.

About Pune:

Pune is the second largest city in the Indian state of Maharashtra, after Mumbai. It is the ninth most populous city in the country with an estimated population of 6.4 million. Along with its extended city limits Pimpri Chinchwad and the three cantonment towns of Pune, Khadki and Dehu Road, Pune forms the urban core of the eponymous Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR). According to the 2011 census, the urban area has a combined population of 5.05 million while the population of the metropolitan region is estimated at 7.27 million. Situated 560 metres (1,837 feet) above sea level on the Deccan plateau on the right bank of the Mutha river, Pune is also the administrative headquarters of its namesake district. In the 18th century, the city was the seat of the Peshwas, the prime ministers of the Maratha Empire and so was one of the most important political centres on the Indian subcontinent. Pune is ranked the number one city in India in the ease of living ranking index.

This event has the weakest field I can ever remember among ATP tour tournaments. Only one top 50 ranked player from the get go, Paire, who was upset.
Among the 4 players left, only Vesely has won before an event.

There is a reason for it. This event used to be in the first week of new year. So, some folks used to go to India to play in this event. With Australia being close by from there, it helps with travel and also with adjusting to the huge clock diff.

Now with the ATP cup displacing this event, it is no wonder that nobody wants to travel that far for just an isolated 25o event and that too right after AO. They should try to get the placement in the schedule changed.

I watched a little bit of Taro Daniel against some indian guy in R1. India has so many people but almost no one is willing to watch a local guy playing. There was about 25 people sitting. The rest of indians went to watch cricket.
