The Tournament:
The St. Petersburg Ladies' Trophy (formerly known as the Ladies Neva Cup) is played on indoor hardcourts. The event is classified as a WTA Premier tournament and was first held in Saint Petersburg in 2003.
It was an ITF Women's Circuit event until 2015. In 2016, it was upgraded to a WTA Premier tournament in 2016, offering a prize money of $753,000, up from only $25,000 and $50,000 in previous years.
The event replaced the Proximus Diamond Games on the WTA tour from 2016.
About St. Petersburg:
Saint Petersburg is situated on the Neva River, at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. With 5 million inhabitants in 2012, it is Russia's second-largest city after Moscow. An important Russian port on the Baltic Sea, it has a status of a federal subject (a federal city).
It was founded by Tsar Peter the Great on 27 May [O.S. 16 May] 1703 and served as a capital of Russian Tsardom and subsequent Russian Empire in 1713-1918 (being replaced by Moscow for a short period of time in 1728-1730).
