who will fire off the first shot?

is it nole`s backhand?

roger`s forehand?

isner`s serve?

dr ivo`s serve?

nadal forehand?

andy murray backhand?

keep in mind that I consider nole`s athetic ability and his movement a weapon also.

how about the gasquet backhand? is it a weapon?

who are some of the others?

you decide and you report.

I am confused between Delpotro's forehand & federer's forehand..Roger's FH is accurate, but Delpo's FH has raw power !!
Federer's OH are cool too..
Not to forget, volleys from roger & Nole/Murray's speed.

The Clipper, by Young Ralph.

It's even more impressive down the line, but it's perfect inside out too...

Isner serve, of course. It's so effective and paralyzing. It is the bane of my tennis watching, and since I live in the US, I'm forced to watch every one of his matches/serving clinic.

Isner's serve. Nobody gets farther on on single stroke than that serve. Imagine big john's ranking if you give even a pretty good serve like novak's. Moreso than any other guy, if you take away their main weapon, isner becomes an absolute nobody.

I am going with del potro`s rocket forehand.

It's a fearsome shot, but hasn't done consistent damage to warrant "the greatest shot in tennis today," certainly not when you compare it to Djokovic's backhand, Djokovic's return, Nadal's forehand, etc...

I'm between Novak's backhand and Rafa's forehand. And I would lean toward Rafa's forehand.

DP has incredible power
Isner has a great serve
Fed's forehand has seen better days and the title says "today"

All of the above are very good candidates. It's hard to decide which one as each gives their master an advantage. I guess we know which shot won't be here: the Novak OH.

As we are talking today, I will say Rafael Nadal's FH--it is really on fire this year. If you back a bit, then I would say Nole's BH. As a pure, raw stroke that comes now and then, Federer has the best overhead of just about anyone I can recall, but in his prime his FH was a beast and the best shot in tennis (unless against Rafa on clay).

I don't want to change the spirit of the OP, but I don't think a single greatest weapon is that big of a deal...I mean, look at Isner's serve...it is devastating but what does it get him? Majors, top 5 ranking? No...just some matches. I think single greatest weapons are more like combos today, like Roger's serve and forehand combo, or Novak's return and backhand...add your own combo. If we are talking one shot by itself in a vacuum, then I agree with everyone in the thread with their choices.

^^ Yeah, as an isolated shot, without context, Isner's serve is easily the biggest weapon in tennis.

I may have to go along with that. you have almost convinced me general anti pusher.

isner does serve from the sky. almost impossible to get a handle on it.

that first serve is like a heat seeking missile.
