What in the world is this old lady doing? Why enter an event right after Wimbledon like that? At least when Martina and Chris did it back in the 80's, it was to continue supporting the lone grass event in the States at the HOF! :popcorn

I know she's played it in the past, but I can only guess it's as a favor to someone or the appearance fee is huge! Red clay of all things; can she win it? I would think she would be exhausted by now!

I'm always amazed at how these players can keep up their physical conditioning with all the travel and moving/flying/meeting people they have to do. I fly/drove/traveled around my share during my 20s and 30s but I don't think I ever really liked it. I haven't back to to the states in eight years because I despise flying and staying in hotels anymore. It's amzing how these players, even with their team helping them travel, keep going the way they do.

And what's with Serena's Wicked Witch of the West getup? Sorry, Couldn't resist after seeing the pics. ;)

For years I thought nothing of jumping on a plane for business or pleasure, but after 9/11 it just got to be too much to deal with! A lot of times I was on my own and something like the airline experience can make all the difference in how one feels about a trip! When they started treating us like cattle, pretending to be secure by checking granny's knitting needles, I stopped "cold turkey!" Flew to NY to participate in my dad's memorial in '06 and that was my last flight! Undressing me at the airport isn't going to stop terrorists; not as I see it! It's a charade that I have no intentions of participating in; esp. paying for the privilege! They lost a very good customer; taking a trip within a trip on many occasions! Idiots! :nono  :dodgy:

Exactly right. She made a promise to them, it's a huge fee and she doesn't want to disappoint pulling out. Can she win it? Of course. It's mostly made up of 3rd tier clay courters and Swedes. Last time she played the thing, she was probably at "C" level and still won it w/ a couple of 3-setters.

Yeah there's nothing at work here other than a huge appearance fees with conditions. I imagine she will play one or two matches at most and then pull out.

More power to her for showing up.

Hope at least she does not play any more events other than Canada and Cincy before USO.

She said she is playing Stanford apparently. Hopefully, she drops out of Toronto and only plays Cincy since it would be bad form to not try to defend her title if she is physically fine.

She's on the schedule for Stanford, Canada and Cinci. She also told BJK she would play WTT for the Kastles this year. That's a lot of commitments seemingly coming one right after the other w/ no rest in between.

In view of CGS, she should drop Stanford and WTT, IMO.

I agree completely. Throw in this Bastad too, but we'll see what she actually does.

I think she will drop something. She can't drop Bastad as she made a commitment after not being able to play last year. Nothing to say that she might not take herself out after a couple rounds unless it proves easy. I can see her not playing Toronto. Cincy she is defending so that is dicey. If she makes a go of Bastad, then she might come up with a reason to avoid Stanford.

Nothing like going about a career like "Benjamin Button!" She took all kind of breaks when younger, now as an old lady her schedule's full! :cover :puzzled :nono  :dodgy:

I don't think Patrick is going to let her play all of these tournaments before the U.S. Open. If he does, then he is going about this wrong. She needs to go into the U.S. as relaxed as possible.

Not to mention Toronto cincy is back to back so it's essentially like a slam.
